During World #AMR Awareness Week, we’re celebrating scientists like Caroline Tigoi who are working to end antimicrobial resistance (AMR). AMR occurs when germs change over time and no longer respond to medicines, making infections harder to treat. This can render existing treatments and tools ineffective, increasing the risk of disease spread, severe illness, and death. This week, the World Health Organization and other global health organizations are working to improve awareness and understanding of AMR—so that the world can fight back. Experts like Caroline can help. Learn more about her story and her work. ??

The World Health Organization and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate a 20% increase in measles cases globally from 2022 to 2023, alongside a substantial rise in countries facing large or disruptive outbreaks. Low-income countries and countries with conflicted-affected or vulnerable settings, where the risk of death from measles is highest, bear the greatest burden. This alarming trend emphasizes the need for stronger immunization efforts to curb the spread of this preventable disease. In 2023, over 22 million children missed their first dose of the measles vaccine, leaving a significant immunity gap that increases the likelihood of outbreaks, cases, and deaths around the world. Organizations like Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance play a key role in ensuring communities have equitable access to vaccines that save lives and help prevent outbreaks. Support for these efforts must continue to ensure that all vulnerable populations—especially young children facing the greatest risk of severe disease and death—are protected. There’s a household object that’s instrumental to global health—and it may not be what you think. ?? That’s right: toilets! Around the world, 3.5 billion people still lack access to proper sanitation. But here’s the good news: Scientists have developed toilets that can neutralize waste at the source, meaning there’s no need for sewage systems that are breeding grounds for diarrheal diseases like typhoid and rotavirus. On #WorldToiletDay, check out the Gates Foundation Discovery Center’s “A Better Way to Go” exhibit through the eyes of Doulaye Kone and Bill Gates to learn how better toilets can save lives: https://bit.ly/3V0FFge

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is proud to be a founding member of the G20 Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty. Around the world, climate change, conflict, and rising food prices are driving significant increases in hunger, malnutrition, and poor health. In 2023, more than 1 in 4 people worldwide did not have regular access to adequate food. Unless we act soon, this situation will only get worse. G20 Brasil 2024 aims to foster collective action and share proven policies to help tackle hunger and poverty in the world’s most vulnerable communities. The Alliance, backed by countries, philanthropies, and multilateral organizations, is taking a critical step toward securing a food-secure future, where everyone has access to the nutritious foods they need to thrive. https://lnkd.in/gpwKtqjK
