  • 2024 is the first-ever National Week Without Driving. Nearly a third of people living in the United States – people with disabilities, young people, seniors and people who can’t afford cars or gas- do not drive. This is why our local off-street network of ADA-compliant sidewalks and multiuse paths in Fayette County, Georgia are so critical for many to reach their destinations. • PeopleForBikes announced on June 25th the 2024 City Ratings. The City Ratings program promotes progress to improve bicycle networks in cities nationwide.?Bike-Walk Fayette has been an active participant since the foundation of the program in 2017. Peachtree City is now the top ranked city (#1) in Georgia with a City Rating score of 48 based on Bicycle Network Analysis. Peachtree City is #16 in the South Region and #207 of all U.S. cities with population less than 50,000. Fayetteville is now #7 and Tyrone #13. Although not ranked, Bike-Walk Fayette assesses Fayette County as overall the top county in Georgia. This steady improvement over time has been due to new path & neighborhood connections triggered by the 2017 SPLOST and impact path construction, and deliberate OpenStreetMap data input by County and City staff with Bike-Walk Fayette volunteers during 2023-24.?This includes all multi-use paths along with bike lanes and the location of all measured quality-of-life facilities and services. The next level of improvement in local bicycle safety will come with completing the County-wide path network with paths and bike lanes, lowering neighborhood side street speed limits to 25mph (not arterials/connectors), and improving surrounding community connections by path and bike lane. • Peachtree City Forms New Transportation Advisory Group The Peachtree City Council approved on June 24, 2024 Ordinance 1221 for forming a new Transportation Advisory Group.?advisory group to help mitigate conflicts on the paths and roadways within Peachtree City. The Group will solicit comments, concerns, and advice from Peachtree City residents regarding the impacts, conflicts, and benefits associated with the multi-use path system, road system, and other means of transportation throughout the city. The group will serve to evaluate citizen concerns and proposals to better develop recommendations that are prioritized based upon feasibility, safety, potential liability, and funding parameters. The group will present their recommendations for action periodically to the City Council. The Transportation Advisory group will be composed of 6 residents with three-year terms following their initial terms and one ex-officio member filled by staff.?Membership will include a bicycle advocacy, running and/or walking advocacy, a disabled resident, a senior resident over the age of 65, and two parents of youth - one with a teenage driver and one with a pre-teen minor, and a City staff member. Bike-Walk Fayette has been proposing since 2014 that Peachtree City formalize this group to address all transportation related resident safety concerns and to improve local conditions for bicycling and walking. The 2021 Multi-Use Path System Citizen Advisory Group had also recommended a similar standing ad-hoc committee. The new Transportation Advisory Group is anticipated to start meeting in August 2024 after the membership has been selected by City officials.?

  • Peachtree City has been recognized again as Bicycle Friendly Community by the League of American Bicyclists for 2023-2027, rejoining 480 other cities in the United States and 11 other Georgia communities with this status. This is the third renewal at the Bronze level, starting first with 2014 and repeating in 2019. The rigorous application process: now a 92-page equivalent survey with supporting documentation, broad City Staff input and a public survey is intended to evaluate the state of bicycling and work towards ways to improve quality of life, sustainability, and active transportation options for more people.?The survey included critically examining the bicycle network and end-of-trip facilities, bicycle activities, public safety measures and education, City budget and staff support, and adopted public policies.?Our Report Card will provide ways and means for Peachtree City to continue to improve bicycling and move up to the Silver-Level. Local residents know well that bicycling is about mobility, sustainability, health, safety and so much more - Bicycle Friendly Communities have a strong bike culture and are great places to live, work, work from home, and visit, when possible. ?
