We increase the use of bicycle-based transportation for everyone through access, low-cost repairs, and education.
关于我们
Known as Free Bikes 4 Kidz Madison from 2017 to 2023, Bikes for Kids Wisconsin is embarking on an enhanced mission of continuing with our impressive bike giveaway program, educational programming, and adding a Bike to Work program. To date, we've given away over 12,503 bikes to people in need. We collect unused bicycles and save them from the landfill by refurbishing them then distributing them back to the community through a robust network of nonprofits serving marginalized communities and through public schools. In fall of 2023, we held our pilot Bike Mechanics program with a local middle school. We'll continue to nurture future bike mechanics through this program that supports the trades by training future bike mechanics. We are building a community bike shop that gives away bikes annually, provides low cost repairs to help keep those bikes riding smoothly, and we sell high quality bikes to help fund our program. Our bike shop is open to the public and is located at 354 Coyier Lane in Madison, Wisconsin.

Wow! This crew did some amazing work last night breaking down about 100 bikes to help us reduce waste, reuse parts, and recycle a lot of metal. Notice all the smiles too—this is who our community is—a lot of caring, compassionate people who have fun despite the hard work and who love giving back to those most in need. ?? Today we were honored to have an operations management class from Edgewood College visit Bikes for Kids. Their professor, Brad Paul, is one of those teachers we remember forever. You know the ones—they operate outside the box, they push boundaries of what we may have thought the learning environment is supposed to be, they even get dirty at a working bike shop with their students. Today we focused on the fact that some things are not shiny and new, like our space. But they saw how we adapt and work with what we have. And, they heard that we’ll keep working hard to earn whatever improvements we can make. The important thing is that we are positively impacting the lives of those we serve. They inspire us! Meeting their needs is what guides our work. ?? Kristie GoForth #leadtheway #celebratewomenleaders #manufacturing #transportation #bike #greenenergy #sustainability #yearofthekids #wisconsin
As a follow up to last week’s in-class discussion, my fantastic students at Edgewood College School of Business had a productive visit this morning to Bikes for Kids Wisconsin. Thanks to the truly original and imaginative Kristie GoForth, we were able to continue our understanding of the operational requirements of this unique and important non-profit. While many companies and organizations too often retreat to a stifling safe corner, Kristie asks “why not?” And, like we’ve read in studies such as “In Search of Excellence,” planning, strategy, creativity, and improvisation do not need operate at cross purposes. In fact, the best enterprises blend all four.
