Using the bicycle as a vehicle for social change

关于我们

Bikes Not Bombs uses the bicycle as a vehicle for social change to achieve economic mobility for Black and other marginalized people in Boston and the Global South. We reclaim thousands of bicycles each year. We create local and global programs that provide skill development, jobs, and sustainable transportation. Our programs mobilize youth and adults to be leaders in community transformation.

Youth Worker, CEO, Cyclist | Celebrating 22 Years With Bikes Not Bombs - From Participant to Executive Leader

Here are a few highlights from my first National Bike Summit last week, alongside my colleague, Joseph Pires, our BOCA Associate at Bikes Not Bombs! ??♂? It was an incredible experience to participate and represent the Massachusetts coalition, including the powerhouse organizations MassBike, Boston Cyclists Union, Boston University Cycle Kitchen, NEMBA, and Bikes Not Bombs. The collective passion and dedication to creating safer, more accessible cycling infrastructure in our state is truly inspiring. Shoutout Vivian Ortiz, Galen Mook, Tiffany Cogell, and so many more! A major highlight was the opportunity to meet with the dedicated teams of Senator Elizabeth Warren, Senator @Edward Markey, and Representative Ayanna Pressley. Their unwavering commitment to safer streets and cycling for all is deeply appreciated. Their support is vital as we work towards a more equitable and bike-friendly future. I was also honored to connect with some remarkable individuals making a real impact in the cycling and STEM fields: Noemi Waight from the University of Buffalo, whose work is driving innovation and education. Kyle Knutson from Phoenix Bikes, empowering youth through cycling. Jeff Donaldson from Project Bike Tech, bringing STEM education to life through bike mechanics. These conversations reinforced the power of bicycles as tools for transportation, recreation, and education. Thank you to everyone, especially our host the League of American Bicyclists, who made the National Bike Summit such a valuable and enriching experience. I'm leaving energized and ready to continue our work at Bikes Not Bombs to build a more just and sustainable world, one bike at a time. #NationalBikeSummit #CyclingAdvocacy #SaferStreets #BikesNotBombs #MassBike #BostonCyclistsUnion #BUCycleKitchen #NEMBA #STEM #CommunityImpact

Bike lanes in Boston: a topic that sparks strong opinions and fills inboxes, as a recent Globe article highlighted. ?? At Bikes Not Bombs, we see them as more than just infrastructure; they're pathways to opportunity, connecting people to jobs, education, and essential services. ???? ?? ?? But we also recognize that change can be challenging, and it's crucial to listen to the concerns of all Bostonians. ??? We need a balanced approach, listening to community concerns while relying on data to inform decisions. ?? A city that works for all is one where everyone can access jobs, education, and essential services safely and efficiently, regardless of their zip code or mode of transportation. Join Bikes Not Bombs at our headquarters in Jamaica Plain for our inaugural Community Advisory Council meeting on March 26 (6-8p). Get more involved and help inform our priorities this year. We need your support! ??♀????? Let's work together to build a more accessible and equitable Boston. https://lnkd.in/eE-9PgQ6 #Community #Sustainability #TransportationEquity #BostonStrong

"How can one small business — often operating in an industry with razor-thin margins — both turn a profit and properly hire, train, and support workers overcoming barriers to employment? Over the course of last summer, I found out." This summer, MBA student Leah Budson (MIT Sloan School of Management) worked with Boston-based employment social enterprise Bikes Not Bombs as a REDF Farber Fellow. Along the way, she gained valuable insights into how employment social enterprises can drive value for employees, customers, and the community at the same time. Read Leah's reflections here: https://lnkd.in/evWxbAzH And applications for the 2025 Farber Fellowship are now open! Use your summer to support transformative change with your business skills. https://lnkd.in/eV3QRiCh #mba #summerfellowship #farber #socialimpact

Each summer, we welcome Farber Fellows – impact-driven, business-savvy students, who spend 10 weeks working one-on-one with our employment social enterprise partners on capacity building projects. Leah Budson is an MBA candidate at MIT Sloan School of Management. She’ll be taking her passion for workforce equity to the Boston-based nonprofit Bikes Not Bombs this summer. Meet Leah: ? While on secondment from Boston Consulting Group, Leah worked for the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation's U.S. Economic Mobility & Opportunity team, which helped spark her interest in the field. ?In undergrad, Leah majored in mathematics at Haverford College, and also completed concentrations in both economics and peace, justice, and human rights. ?Currently, she is one of the co-presidents of Sloan Women in Management, a member of Sloan Pride, and the board chair of a consent-based sexuality education nonprofit Your Empowered Sexuality, Inc. Welcome, Leah! #MeettheFarbers
