Biggs Museum Object of the Month: Celebrating Women’s History Month This March, we’re highlighting Mickalene Thomas’ Interior: Fireplace with Blackbird, a stunning work that blends collage, texture, and pattern to explore themes of identity, memory, and home. Thomas, a contemporary artist best known for her vibrant portraits celebrating Black women, draws inspiration from 1970s interior design and her childhood in Camden, NJ. This print, created in collaboration with Durham Press, layers diverse artistic techniques—screenprint, woodblock, etching, gold leaf, and more—to create a dynamic, multidimensional composition. Her Interiors series examines the home as both a personal and performative space.
