Back in 2016, The Big Fish Initiative planted a seed in the MAR Region. Almost a decade later, we couldn’t be prouder of the work that our partners Comunidad y Biodiversidad A.C. , Healthy Reefs for Healthy People and Fundación para el Ecodesarrollo y la Conservación -FUNDAECO- have done in the Mesoamerican Reef to protect #fishspawningaggregations (FSA) and the magnificent coral reef The #CaymanCrown. Está organizada por Ak' Tenamit, una organización que dirige dos centros educativos para la formación técnica y la empleabilidad de los jóvenes en la carrera de experto en turismo sostenible. ?? También estamos entusiasmados con el evento de ma?ana, organizado por la red guatemalteca de pescadores artesanales del Caribe. La discusión post-proyección promete ser fascinante. ?? La semana que viene publicaremos un resumen de todos nuestros eventos, junto con una actualización sobre el proceso para aprobar la ley que convertirá a la Corona de las Islas Caimán en un AMP. ________________ ???????After an intense week of events in Guatemala, the Big Fish Initiative is now where we feel the happiest: on the coast. ?? Today is a special screening in the Mayan Caribbean. It’s hosted by Ak' Tenamit, an organization that runs two educational centers for technical training and employability of young people in the Career of Expert in Sustainable Tourism. ??We are also excited about tomorrow’s event, organized by the Guatemalan network of Caribbean artisan fishers. ?????We have POSITIVE NEWS for you today. The process to ensure the permanent, full protection of our beloved Cayman Crown reef has achieved an important milestone during these first weeks of 2025. ??In 2020, this coral reef in waters of Guatemala and Belize was granted certain level of protection in both countries. Guatemala established a 10-year fishing ban. Now the Environmental Commission of the Guatemalan Congress has taken a step forward by presenting a bill to make The #CaymanCrown a Marine Protected Area (MPA). ?? ??? ??We end this first month of 2025 with a trilingual calendar in which you can see at a glance the reproductive seasons of our 10 priority species. ?? ?? ??These reef species belong to 2 big families that comprise slow-growing, late maturing fishes. The adult fish of these species share the same reproductive behavior, forming predictable, localized, seasonal spawning aggregations that are very vulnerable to overharvesting. ????Such aggregations should be protected, and we ask for your support to do so before it's too late.
