Big Buddy Program

Over the summer, we had the pleasure to film the Mayor's Youth Workforce Experience (MYWE). Here is what the program meant to the scholars in their own words. MYWE is an 8-week internship and enrichment program that provides work experience and mentorship to youth in Baton Rouge during the summer. It is a partnership between the office of Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome, Big Buddy Program, EmployBR, and Safe Hopeful Healthy Baton Rouge.

Student Financial Health is a very important focus in our city and state. We had an opportunity to amplify our work by supporting students from 5 of our local high schools with a Financial Empowerment segment on Credit! The collaboration with the Angel Reese Foundation and the Big Buddy Program was an elevated experience for the success of our future student leaders! In the spirit of #NationalVolunteerWeek, we're spotlighting some of our awesome employee volunteers and learning more about them through their volunteer experiences. First up is Belinda S. Richard, associate group underwriter. ???????? ???? ?????? ???????? ???????? ???? ????????????????????????? It's the people you encounter. You can meet some amazing people from children to adults. There are life lessons to be learned from volunteering. ?????? ???? ?????? ??????????????????? I volunteer to give back to so many people who have helped me and my family throughout my life. My mom taught us at a very young age we should give back because so many people invested in us during our lives. ???????? ?????? ???????????? ?????? ?????? ???????????? ???????? ????????????????????????? The new skills that I feel I gained from volunteering are COMPASSION and UNDERSTANDING. Some of the things we encounter while volunteering can be hard to see and listen to so you have to have compassion and understanding when meeting some of the people. ???? ?????????? ?? ???????????????????? ???????????????????????? ?????? ?????????? ???????????????????????? ???????? ?????? ?????????? ???????? ???? ?????????? ???????? ??????? There are two organizations that are very dear to me. The first one is the Big Buddy Program. I have always enjoyed and loved working with children this organization gives me the opportunity to that with children of all ages. The second organization is Grandparents Raising Grandchildren. As a grandparent who has raised her grandchildren, I understand how some of the grandparents feel and we all feed off of each other’s experiences. They have taught me so many things over the years, and I like spending time with them and learning from them. ???????????????? ?????? ?????????? ???????? ???? ??????? Being a Blue Cross employee for almost 40 years and volunteering with the Company for those 40 years has been a great experience. When I came to Blue Cross all those years ago, I was so excited they offered opportunities for us to volunteer or be a part of our community. We started out helping the March of Dimes and we have grown over the years. Our presence in the communities we work in is SO POWERFUL and the people of our state appreciate how dedicated the employees of Blue Cross are when we volunteer. I have had great experiences, have met a lot of amazing people, and can’t wait to meet more. It is AWESOME when you go out with your family and you see some of the people you have met through volunteering and they remember you from volunteering with Blue Cross and state how they want you and your co-workers to volunteer at their next event. Thank you, Belinda, for sharing your time and talents with both the community and with us at BCBSLA! We're proud to work beside you every day.

Dr. Christy Valentine Theard, MD, MBA, Healthy Blue Louisiana plan President danced for an incredible cause last evening along with her professional partner Donald Jones Jr., benefiting the Big Buddy Program . Dancing for Big Buddy 2024 was a huge success and our community is grateful for its impact!!

Here is one of the videos that we helped to create for the Dancing for Big Buddy event last Saturday. The Big Buddy Program is focused on mentoring the youth in Baton Rouge. Mentoring is a job anyone can do, and we encourage you to consider becoming a mentor and changing the lives of the youth in our community!
