Tonight Big Brothers Big Sisters of South Texas had its monthly Black Advisory Council meeting! What’s the Black Advisory Council, you ask? The Black Advisory Council, or BAC was established almost 15 years ago to collaborate and identify various events and people in order to find potential mentors of color to match with the youth in our program. When matching youth to mentors, not only do we match based on common interests, but we understand that sometime we learn best through the guidance of someone that had a similar upbringing. Like Ralph Crowder III’s shirt says, Be (one of a) Kind and learn more about BAC by contacting me, Trisha Ivy, Denise Barkhurst, Tori Johnson-Inimgba, MAURISA G., or Michael Torres, PMP! ?? #Mentorship is a Powerful Gift?? Meet my niece, Tiphanee, a high school Big Sister from Las Vegas, NM, who shared her heartwarming experience with her Little, Emiliano. "Being a Big Sis was pretty nice. I was able to connect with my Little and mentor him to the best of my ability. Emi's home setting was rocky and he had so much energy, but I like to think I was able to be a constant in his life. We would play games, watch movies, and spend time outside playing soccer, football, or tag—finding a fun way to release his energy. After each game, I noticed he was more calm, and it felt great knowing I helped him find that balance."
