Happy Women's History Month! Here are a few of our favorite women in the marine sciences that paved the way for us today! 1. Marie Tharp: She discovered the Mid-Atlantic Ridge and proved the validity of the idea that all continents were once connected 2. Katsuko Saruhashi: She was the first to develop a method to measure carbon dioxide in seawater, which helps us understand how much carbon dioxide the ocean absorbs and releases 3. Sylvia Earle: She was the first female chief scientist of the U.S. NOAA and holds the record for the deepest walk on the sea floor 4. Dawn Wright: Also known as DeepSea Dawn, she was a pioneer in mapping the seafloor and ocean with over 20 years of deep-sea expeditions and is the current first female Chief Science Officer of ESRI These women, and many more, have paved the way for the next generation in ocean science. Our resident artist Kim Rizio @studiorizio has transformed discarded plastics into a breathtaking sustainable art installation—a powerful reminder that what we see as waste still holds value. ???? ? ? It's almost time for the Big Game! Are you throwing a watch party? Here's a few tips for a sustainable party: 1. Use reusable dishes and cutlery. Sure, it takes a little more cleanup afterwards, but the environment will thank you for not using single-use plastics! 2. Have vegetarian or vegan snacks. There's so many good veggie snacks, so get creative and introduce your friends to some delicious plant-based snacks! 3. Shop local or in season. Whether you're deciding to go vegetarian for your party or not, make sure you get local ingredients that are in season. Using out-of-season ingredients means they were shipped from the other side of the world, and supporting local is always a good choice! 4. DIY your decorations. If you're decorating for the Big Game, either thrift your decorations or get creative and make them yourself.
