Last week we held our annual Diabetic Lower Extremity Symposium (DLES) in Boston. It was attended by over 140 doctors, scientists and residents including doctors from China, Indonesia and New Zealand. Lectures were given by podiatrists, vascular surgeons, plastic surgeons and basic science researchers. This year's keynote speaker was Dr. Marc Schermerhorn, Chief of Vascular Surgery at the BIDMC. We are already starting to work on next year's International Diabetic Lower Extremity Symposium (IDLES) in November, 2025.

The Division of Podiatric Surgery at BIDMC is an Harvard Medical School teaching affiliate. It is composed of 6 podiatric foot and ankle surgeons specializing in all aspects of foot surgery, including reconstructive surgery, revisional surgery and limb salvage surgery. Our surgeons are nationally recognized and participate in CME programs nationally and internationally. They are also leaders in the profession of podiatric surgeon holding positions in the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons (ACFAS), the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgeons (ABFAS) and the Council on Podiatric Medical Education (CPME) of the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA). It also runs a highly competitive 3-year residency program providing training in all aspects of foot and ankle surgery and rotations in internal medicine, emergency medicine, general and vascular surgery, orthopedic trauma, anesthesiology and plastic surgery. In addition to serving as the primary provider of non-surgical and surgical care of the foot throughout the BIDMC network, the Division also provides collaborative foot and ankle care through The Foot & Ankle Center of HMFP and the Limb Preservation Center at BIDMC. The former is a collaboration with orthopedics while the latter is a collaboration with vascular surgery and plastic surgery. Our faculty is available for case consultation and for CME programs.

Today I began the process of clearing out my office. In going through my library, I found these books written by and given to me by former students of mine. We are happy and proud to announce that the 5th edition of our textbook, The Diabetic Foot: Medical and Surgical Management, has just been published. Edited by Drs. Veves, Giurini and Schermerhorn, it contains 31 newly rewritten chapters featuring many leading authorities on the diabetic foot. It combines basic science, clinical science and translational research in one publication. This has been the culmination of over 1 year effort and has become a leading publication on diabetic foot pathology. It is available through the website below.
