Students at Purdue University needed an advanced prototyping facility – a makerspace – where they could come together to design and build solutions to real-world problems. Purdue Polytechnic Institute and the College of Engineering came together to create a state-of-the-art, hands-on makerspace open to all Purdue University students. Thanks to key industry partnerships, students learn, design and create at Bechtel Center using the latest equipment – the very equipment they’ll use when they join the workforce after graduation. From individual projects to entrepreneurial ventures to industry-sponsored team competitions, Purdue students use Bechtel Center to bring innovative designs to life.

Anuv Dhariwal, a peer mentor here at the Bechtel Center milled a part for the display stand on which the Midas rocket, made by the PSP Spaceport team, was showcased at the 2024 Spaceport competition in New Mexico. This part was manufactured in the Haas Machining Center in BIDC using Kennametal tools, Haimer heat shrink holder, and Piranha fixtures. We appreciate Haas Automation, Inc., Kennametal, HAIMER, and Piranha Fabrication Equipment for their generous contributions that make it possible for the students here at Purdue University to learn how to machine and manufacture many different parts.

A lot of smiles came from building paper rockets with the children at Riley Children's Hospital in Indianapolis. Brooklyn made the best rocket out of all of us so we mounted her rocket on top of our actual rocket here at the Bechtel Center. We were honored to host representatives from HAIMER USA, Matt Frieden and Brendt Holden, at the Bechtel Innovation Design Center. They were given comprehensive tours of our facility, with a special focus on the machines utilizing the HAIMER Heatshrink System. During their visit, our supervisors, Adam Arafat, Atulram Vucha, Matthew Gammon, and Troy Crooks, and staff, Anirudh Pal and Matthew Swabey, showcased the use of HAIMER Heatshrink Tool Holders by crafting a medallion with it. We are grateful for the generous gift of a Power Clamp i4.0 from HAIMER. This equipment will greatly benefit our work here at Bechtel Center. Thanks to our partnership with HAIMER USA, students at the Bechtel Center are empowered to explore their creativity without limits. “The HAIMER partnership has been an absolute beast of an experience that has enabled the center to increase productivity and performance,” Vucha said. “On the mills, we are now capable of pre-assembled tools that save an hour of setup and disassembly. On top of that, we can also use through-spindle coolant with most of our tools and streamline the whole process of machining.” #HAIMERUSA #BechtelCenter #Engineering #Purdue
