This week, Bicycle Health announced the first-ever virtual medications for opioid use disorder treatment program for adolescents. Now, teens aged 16 & 17 in the state of Maine will be able to access the gold standard in opioid use disorder care—wherever they may be. Organizations like the American Academy of Pediatrics have long recommended medications like buprenorphine for the treatment of adolescents with severe OUD. Stigmas and misconceptions around MOUD treatment for adolescents coupled with other access barriers have prevented this often overlooked patient population from getting the care they need early on to reach and maintain recovery into their adulthood. We’re hopeful this program will help break down these barriers to care and become a blueprint for virtual OUD care in states like Maine that also recognize the positive impact MOUD treatment can have for adolescents. This month, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) took steps to expand access to opioid use disorder treatment through its new?final rule, which includes a provision that permanently allows for the initiation of treatment (methadone and buprenorphine) via telehealth.
