关于我们

Our mission is to conserve in a participatory, transparent and sustainable way the coastal marine resources and the ecosystem services which they provide for the social and cultural well-being of present and future generations in the Bay Islands. The Bay Islands Conservation Association (BICA), is a private, non-profit, grassroot organization founded in 1990 by citizens concerned about the future well-being of the Bay Islands, Honduras in order to initiate and coordinate efforts for the protection of the fragile natural resources of the islands. To operate the organization has been divided into three chapters strategically located in each of the Islands, Utila, Roatan and Guanaja; and more recently in Tampa, FL as an established 501c3 to facilitate donations by interested parties. BICA has 30 plus years of experience implementing programs and projects in the Bay Islands, in environmental education, community development, protection and research & monitoring. Since 1994, BICA signs co-management agreement with the Institute of Forestry Conservation and Wildlife (ICF) for the management of marine and terrestrial protected areas in the Bay Islands of Honduras.

  • Support BICA in the 6th ACROPORA Roatan 2024 Eco Trail Run 2K, 5K, 10K, 20K Vida para la Isla to promote decrease in single use plastics, waste separation and the use of reef safe sunscreen. BICA is an environmental NGO that has been working in the Honduran Bay Islands since the 90s. Our mission is to conserve in a participatory, transparent and sustainable way the coastal marine resources and the ecosystem services which they provide for the social and cultural well-being of present and future generations in the Bay Islands. In 2017, we began this run as part of our awareness campaign on the importance of our reefs and the need to minimize plastic in our daily life. Since then, we have promoted bans on single use plastics (became law in 2018 on Roatan) #PLASTICFREEROATAN, strengthened the waste pickers association and implemented pilot separation projects around the Bay Islands. This will be the third year after the pandemic that we hope to hold the event. By 2024, we hope to use this fun, family-friendly event to create change that benefits people and the health of reefs by doing the following: -Increase awareness on how waste and other chemicals affect us and our reefs. -Restoration projects in the Bay Islands National Marine Park (BINMP). -Promote a municipal ordinance for separation in businesses, schools and homes. -Promote a municipal ordinance to ban petroleum-based sunscreens that are not safe for reefs. All proceeds generated from the event will go to the BICA programs in the BINMP. Specifically, to continue the waste separation pilot projects in communities; as well, as the coral restoration project.
