Women leaders and entrepreneurs: we need to take our wealth seriously. We are more likely to die poor. The companies we build are less likely to attract investment. And in an effort to both stave off age discrimination and deal with the "pink tax" that makes anything made for women more expensive... We often pay pretty steep "maintenance costs" in the name of presenting a professional front. (No you do NOT need to "play by the rules" but a lot of women do for very rational reasons.) The trouble is...although many of us KNOW we need to take our wealth seriously....we aren't necessarily motivated by money. Which means it's critical to find your wealth building why. This month we lifted the curtain on a unique project our team quietly worked on throughout Q1. We brought together a group of successfuly women entrepreneurs -- women for whom money hasn't necessarily been THE PRIMARY driver, but who have nonetheless created financial success and independence in their lives and businesses. Margins = Space Mostly, we only think about profit margins. But we need to think beyond that to build a calmer business. We need capacity margins, emotional margins, energetic margins to allow us the space to operate our businesses at our best. In order to do that, though, we need to understand what our goals are, what our own definition of success is (not what the default tells us it should be). Having a clear picture of what WE want allows us to build towards that, to solve for that. I shared my thoughts about this in an audio summit session called "Going Beyond Margins for Emotions and Capacity" where I dig into my perspective on business success, building wealth -- and what it actually means to be "wealthy." (Spoiler alert: it's probably not what you're thinking it is). As a business owner, I remember seeing a report called the “Statement of Cashflows” ?? It’s based on a method of calculating cash flow based on the P&L budget for the year. The trouble is it’s really a rough guess - most small businesses change their plan frequently. Never mind the unpredictable nature of sales! In short: 1?? Small businesses don’t stick to a budget religiously. 2?? Most businesses experience unexpected or unforeseen events. 3?? Many businesses have invoices that are paid late. So, whilst the indirect method of cash flow might have a place in a business plan as it’s your best guess. But when it comes to the reality of everyday business life - what is needed is a ???????????? ???????? ???????? forecast. A cash flow that factors in every bank transaction, every invoice that is due, and every bill that needs to be paid. As Susan Boles (fCFO and Founder of Beyond Margins) would describe “?????? ?????? ???????????? ?????????????????? ?????? ?????? ?????? ???????? ???????? ?????????????? [?????? ?????????????????? ???????? ??????????????] ?????? ????????’?? ???????? ???????????????? ?????? ???????????????? ????????????." The trouble with traditional direct cash flow forecasts is: You can’t base this report on invoices and bills that are in Xero or QuickBooks. ?? You also need to factor in regular payments, subscriptions and planned work that hasn’t been billed or invoiced yet. ?? You’ll want to factor in payroll, loan repayments and anything else due. ?? Really what you need is a kind of hybrid rolling model - which takes information from budgets AND also looks at expected payment dates on live invoices and bills. ?? Without double counting! If only a solution existed to solve this… ?? #CashFlow #CFO #FractionalCFO #BusinessOwners
