  • Did you know about the Green Heart Project? With the Inflation Reduction Act providing funding for cities to plant more trees this year, the Green Heart Louisville study provides compelling evidence for urban greening projects. By strategically planting trees, especially in disadvantaged areas near highways, we can create healthier, more equitable communities. The results are striking - after just a few years, people living in the tree-planted areas showed a 13% reduction in high-sensitivity C-reactive protein, a key marker of inflammation linked to heart disease, diabetes and certain cancers. This improvement is comparable to the benefits of starting a regular exercise routine. But the benefits don't stop there. The study also found that BMI and cholesterol levels improved over time in the tree-planted neighborhoods. Researchers believe the trees act as natural filters, removing harmful air pollutants from the highway that can cause inflammation and exacerbate health issues. This research is a crucial step in quantifying the health benefits of urban trees and making the case for investing in our urban forests! Learn more about this project: Abernathy, B. (2020). • In this article, Stechemesser?et al. (2024) show us how a permaculture design mindset will keep us moving forward. These authors highlight the critical importance of integrating various policies to enhance nature and climate resilience. We recognize that leveraging available resources, such as artificial intelligence, can significantly advance our efforts in this area. AI can provide us with powerful tools for data analysis, modeling ecosystems, and optimizing resource management. By harnessing these technologies, we can make informed decisions that support sustainable practices and foster resilience in our natural environments. Moreover, this article emphasizes that effective climate action requires a systems thinking approach. This means understanding that the interplay between policies is vital; it’s not sufficient to implement a singular policy or a random assortment of them. Instead, we must focus on creating a synergistic framework that combines various strategies tailored to specific ecological contexts. In summary, as we move forward in our mission, we advocate for a holistic approach that utilizes both innovative technologies like AI and comprehensive policy frameworks. This will enable us to build a more resilient future for our ecosystems and communities. Let's equip teachers with this type of knowledge and more, so they can educate the students that will become the eco-citizens of tomorrow. Go to https://lnkd.in/ed79GMQP to learn how to help! • "Observe nature thoroughly rather than labour thoughtlessly." - Masanobu Fukuoka This insight from Fukuoka encapsulates a foundational principle of permaculture: the necessity of deep observation in sustainable agricultural practices. By closely studying natural ecosystems, we can design systems that not only enhance productivity but also promote ecological health. The Importance of Observation in Permaculture Research indicates that effective permaculture practices are rooted in understanding the complex interrelationships within ecosystems. For instance, Fukuoka's natural farming methods demonstrate that minimal intervention can lead to increased biodiversity and soil fertility (Fukuoka, 1975). By allowing nature to dictate the processes, we can reduce reliance on synthetic inputs and labor-intensive practices, ultimately leading to more resilient agricultural systems. Evidence-Based Practices A study by Holmgren (2002) emphasizes that permaculture systems are information and design-intensive rather than labor-intensive. This approach allows for the creation of sustainable landscapes that function harmoniously with their environment, reducing the need for excessive labor while improving yields. As professionals in the field… We must prioritize observation and understanding of natural systems. By doing so, we can cultivate landscapes that not only meet human needs but also restore and enhance the ecological balance. Embracing Fukuoka's philosophy encourages us to rethink our approach to agriculture and adopt practices that are in harmony with nature. • The Power of Systems Thinking in Education ??? Teacher Ariel shares profound insights on the importance of systems thinking in education. By integrating these principles into our curriculum, we empower students to understand and name connections, making learning truly meaningful. The Benefits of Systems Thinking ?? Systems thinking helps students make connections and notice things in the world around them. As Albert Einstein once said, "The world as we have created it is a process of our thinking. It cannot be changed without changing our thinking." By teaching students to think in terms of systems, we enable them to see the bigger picture and understand how different elements interact. Research has shown that systems thinking improves problem-solving skills and critical thinking abilities. As Donella Meadows, a pioneering systems thinker, stated, "The act of seeing interconnections is a powerful intellectual tool." By fostering this mindset, we equip students with the necessary skills to navigate complex challenges in their future. Staying Power of Knowledge ?? When concepts are learned through systems thinking, they stay with children, helping them make connections and notice things in the world around them. Maya Angelou wisely said, "Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better." By providing students with a systems thinking framework, we ensure that their knowledge has staying power and can be applied in various contexts. Studies have demonstrated that knowledge that is connected to real-world applications is more likely to be retained and applied in the future. As Fritjof Capra, a systems theorist, stated, "The shift from the mechanistic to the systemic conception of life has far-reaching social, cultural, and philosophical implications." By integrating systems thinking into our educational practices, we create a foundation for lifelong learning and growth. Fostering Meaningful Learning ?? By integrating systems thinking into our curriculum, we empower students to understand and name these connections, making learning truly meaningful. As Buckminster Fuller, a renowned systems thinker, said, "You never change things by fighting the existing reality. To change something, build a new model that makes the existing model obsolete." By adopting a systems thinking approach, we create an educational environment where knowledge goes beyond the classroom and stays with students for life. Join us in fostering an educational environment where systems thinking is at the core. Together, we can empower the next generation to be critical thinkers, problem-solvers, and agents of positive change in our world. ????

  • WHAT'S ON YOUR TOOLBOX: Bearberry?(Arctostaphylos uva-ursi) Bearberry is a low-growing evergreen shrub that helps prevent soil erosion. Its extensive root system stabilizes the soil, making it ideal for slopes and areas prone to erosion. It also provides habitat and food for various wildlife, including birds and small mammals. So, by incorporating it into permaculture systems, it can enhance local biodiversity. It is drought-resistant as well, and requires minimal water, making it suitable for xeriscaping and permaculture designs focused on water conservation. As a ground cover plant, bearberry can suppress weeds and reduce the need for herbicides, aligning with permaculture principles of minimizing chemical inputs. The leaves of bearberry contain compounds like arbutin, which have been studied for their potential health benefits, including antimicrobial properties. Also, while not commonly consumed, bearberry leaves can be used in teas, and the berries are edible, although they are not widely favored for their taste. Care Instructions: 1. Light Requirements Bearberry thrives in?full sun?but can tolerate?partial shade. Ideally, it should receive at least 4 to 6 hours of direct sunlight daily to promote healthy growth and flowering. 2. Soil Conditions This plant prefers?sandy, acidic soil?(pH 4.5 to 5.5) that is well-draining. It can grow in infertile soils and does not require fertilization. 3. Watering Bearberry is?drought-tolerant?once established. Water every?7-10 days, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings. Avoid overwatering, as this can lead to root rot.?During prolonged dry spells, additional watering may be necessary. 4. Pruning Minimal pruning is required. It’s best to prune in?late winter or early spring?to shape the plant and remove any dead branches. Aim to remove about one-third of the most recently grown branches to maintain its form. 5. Pests and Diseases Bearberry is generally resilient but can be affected by?root rot?if overwatered. Ensure proper drainage to prevent this issue. Monitor for pests like aphids. Additional Tip! *When planting bearberry, space the plants?12-24 inches apart?to allow for their natural spread. Incorporating bearberry into permaculture systems not only enhances ecological health but also supports sustainable practices that align with the principles of permaculture. Its ability to thrive in various conditions while providing numerous benefits makes it a valuable plant for both ecological restoration and sustainable agriculture.
