Giving Thanks: Yesterday we hosted our annual in-house #Thanksgiving meal in all our offices. As we disperse this week for some much-needed rest, we’re thankful for each other, for our clients and collaborators, and for the opportunity to design for a positive impact in our communities. Best in Brick: J.Coopers Row has won both Design and Craftsmanship Excellence Awards from the Mid-Atlantic Masonry Association! Developed by Jefferson Apartment Group, this new residential building at 1319 South Capitol Street is designed to sensitively integrate with its historic neighbors, with a facade animated by a 7"-deep, two-story-high brick module and by a rhythmic counterpoint of balconies that either recede or project outward. Premier Construction: The completion of Gallery 64, a LEED Platinum-certified, 12-story residential building in Southwest DC, marked the culmination of the arts-focused redevelopment of the former Randall Junior High School, reports Premier Construction News. Developed by Lowe and Mitsui Fudosan America, Gallery 64 merges modern living with arts and culture, alongside the Rubell Museum DC, a contemporary art destination in the transformed historic school building. Time to Yourself: Attention, fans of midcentury modern design! The New York Times reports that the iconic three-sided Vulcain clock hanging in Eero Saarinen’s TWA Terminal, recently restored by BBB and converted by MCR Hotels into the TWA Hotel, is now available for purchase—or at least, a reproduction of it. Fun fact: as BBB’s Richard Southwick tells the Times, the clock wasn’t even original to the building. “Reportedly, Howard Hughes could not accept a design of an airline terminal without a prominent public clock,” Richard says, so TWA installed the iconic timepiece within a year of the terminal’s opening. Living History: BBB has been proud to work on the Historic Structure Report (HSR) for DACOR and DACOR Bacon House Foundation and its landmark 1825 brick mansion, one of the finest examples of Federal-era residential architecture remaining in the nation’s capital, only two blocks west of the White House. At “The President's Neighborhood: Two Dozen Blocks, Two Blockbuster Centuries of Change,” a dinner event on November 21, architectural historian and BBB Senior Associate Katherine Hummelt will share how the HSR is helping to shape the future of this historic home. Honor and Remembrance: This Veterans Day, we salute those who made the ultimate sacrifice on behalf of their country. We’ve had the privilege of completing several projects dedicated to the fallen, including at the National Park Service’s Battleground National Cemetery in Washington, DC. Here, the restoration and conversion of the 1873 Superintendent’s Lodge into administrative space, and the restoration of the adjacent 1921 Rostrum, help to make the site a living memorial to those who perished during the Civil War. Today, as described by Theodore O’Hara, in a poem excerpted on the restored bronze placard in front of the Rostrum: “On fame’s eternal camping-ground, Their silent tents are spread, And glory guards with solemn round The bivouac of the dead.” ??: Joseph Romeo Photography https://lnkd.in/efJnujHY #veteransday
