Episode One - Life in Energy Poverty Meet Foluke Ajisafe, a senior staff engineer at Liberty Energy since 2021. Born and raised in Nigeria, she experienced firsthand the challenges of energy poverty before moving to the U.S. for school. "I can remember how many times I entered the kitchen because [my grandma] would cook with firewood, and it was so dark in there because of the charcoal and the fumes all around. In Nairobi, they will help convert schools from firewood to LPG, significantly impacting the estimated 1.3 million metric tons of firewood burned annually for student meals across Kenya. Partner Spotlight: Kisac Enterprises We are thrilled to announce a new partner of ours who will help in our quest to spread clean cooking in Kenya. Kisac Enterprises in Kisii County, Kenya will expand their LPG business by offering LPG cylinders and stoves to families through existing savings and loans groups (“chamas”). One year ago, the Bettering Human Lives Foundation was founded with a mission to provide clean cooking fuels to those who need it most. Today, we are proud to have partnered with incredible innovators like Henos Energy , Envirofit International, and MamaGas working towards a brighter future where families no longer have to cook over dangerous open fires or polluting stoves. One-third of humanity still prepares meals this way, contributing to premature death and limiting potential. By supporting local entrepreneurs and innovators, we are giving families access to modern, clean energy, helping lift them out of poverty, and ultimately bettering human lives. In the capital city, Accra, 51% of households use LPG for cooking, while 40% rely on charcoal. Outside Accra, charcoal remains the main cooking fuel in urban areas. We’re working to change that.
