DID YOU KNOW? In Kenya, biomass from wood is the primary energy source, making up 65% of total energy supplies. Around 80% of Kenyan households rely on firewood for cooking and heating, and up to 95% of energy in rural areas comes from wood, agricultural residue, and animal waste. This heavy dependance on traditional biomass fuels means that most families are heating their homes, warming water, and cooking their meals in smoke-filled, polluting environments. Every day, billions of people rely on traditional fuels like wood, charcoal, and agricultural waste for cooking. This practice may seem simple, but it has dangerous side effects — especially when it comes to air quality. Burning these fuels releases PM2.5, tiny airborne particles measuring just 2.5 micrometers or smaller. Because of their size, these particles can penetrate deep into our lungs and even enter the bloodstream, making them some of the deadliest pollutants we face.
