In a thoughtful mashup, the principles of Better Capitalism are nicely paired with the principles in Stephen Covey’s classic The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. Though not specifically religious in nature, both books are rooted in some of the most profound spiritual mandates that exist, such as?love your neighbor as yourself?(Mark 12:30-31) and let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others (Philippians 2:4). We encourage you read this summary and then explore both of these books and discover the similarities for yourself. If you do, we believe they can have a profound impact on your outlook and decisions; and in return, impact the world around you for the better. #management #professionaldevelopment #personaldevelopment #spirituality #capitalism

Unleashing profitable & ethical capitalism through mutual benefit

Capitalism is flawed. Capitalism can become better. If either of those statements excites you, enjoy our book & message us to be part of constructive conversation. If either of those statements bothers you, we challenge you to take a breath & read a few chapters of our book - or at least the free preview! We appeal to your open-mindedness: be intellectually honest enough to read an unexpected perspective. Cato Institute review by Dr. Art Carden, Senior Fellow with the American Institute for Economic Research: "Better Capitalism is a sincere search for a better world." Walter Brueggemann, Columbia Theological Seminary: “This book plunges the reader right into the interface of theology (faith) and economics, exactly where thoughtful, responsible adults need to be situated in our crisis-marked world. ‘Plantation’ in their usage refers to a winner-take-all economics that exploits others for self-advantage. ‘Partnership’ concerns an economic practice of mutuality that contributes to the common good while attending to one’s own interest. This book merits close, sustained attention as a compelling move beyond both careless thinking and easy ideology.” Tony Reid, Senior Vice President (retired), Marriott International: "Better Capitalism is an eloquent and articulate reminder of the importance of understanding economics in the context of our communities, country, and roles as business leaders. In explaining the profound connection between economics and theology, the authors have provided a strong case for the critical need for partnership between business leaders and communities to create a stronger and more robust economy that provides benefit to all.” Rev. Dr. David Gushee, Past President of American Academy of Religion: "One of the things I like most about Better Capitalism is the way it shoots the gap between our current cultural extremes: it is by no means a defense of laissez-faire capitalism but neither is it a socialist manifesto."

How do we transform from the harmfulness of our current form of capitalism to a better capitalism? With two important mindset changes. The first mindset change is to shift our economic thinking from “maximize” to “optimize.” We can’t endlessly maximize but we can endlessly optimize. The second mindset change is to shift our theological thinking from “rule” to “care.” In the creation story of Genesis 1:28 the English word rule (or dominate) means to care for (or have stewardship over.) As this post shows, with the right thinking we can have both a healthy economy and a healthy planet. I’m not an economist, a historian, or a philosopher. But my latest podcast guests are! This week on Manager on a Mission, I interviewed the authors of the book, "Better Capitalism." Paul Knowlton, Esq., MDiv. and Aaron Hedges are experts on economics, but also on theology. ?? Confession: I had my hackles up about the idea of theology having a place in economics (former Catholic schoolgirl here) when I started reading their book, but it's actually about a lot of the things I talk about, like the power dynamics in Corporate America, why work is so bad for so many employees, and of course, some things we can do to fix it. Take a listen and let me know what you think!
