The mission of the BMRC is to: Support and foster investigators to pursue careers in translational, clinical and basic science research in musculoskeletal-related fields. Encourage and support the education of trainees interested in musculoskeletal clinician scientist pathways. Support the discovery and sharing of scientific knowledge to benefit the musculoskeletal research community. Our immediate goal is to support a collaborative community of scientists and trainees to share knowledge, tools and models to perform high-impact musculoskeletal research.

BMRC Executive Director Joon Y. Lee and Chief, UPMC Orthopaedic Service Line MaCalus V. Hogan, MD, MBA were invited guests to this year’s Vanscoy Winter Academy, held by the University of Pittsburgh Health Sciences. The annual event hosts speakers that present breakthrough findings on a multitude of topics, including cancer, vaccines, mental health issues and opioid use. This year’s topic was “Healthy Aging: Live Long, Live Well”, with highlights from Dr. Anantha Shekhar, Senior Vice Chancellor for the Health Sciences and John and Gertrude Petersen Dean, School of Medicine and Joan Gabel, Chancellor.?Mr. Orland Bethel also delivered remarks about his namesake center and the research being conducted to ensure future generations age well and live better. #winteracademy2025 #pittortho #bmrc #research #agingwell

The BMRC's future lab space is in the beginning stages of demolition, with old carpets being removed from offices and our lab benches being removed and cleared to make room for fresh set-ups and new technology that our researchers need. OREF/MTF Biologics Research Grant?provides $100,000 for research focused on the science of biologic – reconstruction, bone regeneration, transplantation - allografts, including stem cells for graft transplantation. OREF/Goldberg Arthritis Research Grant?provides $50,000 in seed and start-up funding for promising research projects that address issues related to the treatment of arthritis with an emphasis on arthroplasty. OREF/ASES/Rockwood Clinical Shoulder Research Grant?provides $50,000 in funding and encourages new investigators to conduct research in the area of shoulder care. Mentored Clinician Scientist Grant?provides $20,000 for the development of new clinician scientists who have demonstrated success as both a clinician and a researcher. Allows investigators to spend dedicated time in research for a period of up to five years to develop a long and productive career in academic surgery. We were happy to host Dr. Young Jang, associate professor at Georgia Tech, this past week as our invited speaker at our monthly BMRC lab seminar. Dr. Jang's lab at Georgia Tech uses multi-disciplinary approaches to study muscle stem cell biology and develops bioactive stem cell delivery vehicles for use in regenerative medicine. The remarkable story of just how the BioBank came to be is in PittMed magazine today!
Our BMRC Orthopaedic BioBank has long been a dream of our Executive Director Dr. Joon Lee and Scientific Director Dr. Nam Vo - however, conversations the two had about the Bank and all the good it could achieve usually ended with the recognition that funding was simply not available.
