The The Secret HR Society and HiBob co-hosted a lively debate around “employee retention”.?With employees indicating staying longer, perhaps after all the layoffs and right-sizing, should we focus on retaining employees?
Our CEO & Co-Founder, Hilary Klassen, together with Head of Coaching & Co-Founder Inka Kretschmer, argued, “No, we shouldn’t be thinking of retention schemes because we want employees to be self-motivated and high-performing for however long they might stay at the company. A great indicator is actually when the employee leaves, they are moving on towards their next best-fit challenge that the current company couldn’t provide.?And, they speak about how their manager and the company supported their learning and growth objectives throughout.?A better indicator is whether the employee comes back at another stage in their career.?We should be gathering data whether an employee would consider returning. This would show that the company is doing something right.
It’s up to each people manager to know the aspirations and goals of their employees and support them on their career journey.?Skills like coaching and feedback need to continuously present; yet, managers lack these crucial skills.?I’d recommend starting there to create a culture of high performance.? It’s only on stop at a station for many employees on their career journey…make that stop count.”
We also ?? hearing from:
Melanie Wagner, HiBob: “Make retention as individualistic as possible.?Find out the true needs and goals of each person.”
Syed Ali Abbas, HelloFresh - “Discover the type and direction of the organization early.?Keep questioning the founders or C-Levels about their ambitions.?Are you a a cost-orientated or a revenue-driven company?? Create clarity around expectations that matches this culture.”
Giles Harden, Zalando - “We need to think of work as a product. What purpose does this work serve to people and what’s the value?”
Anna Ott, HV Capital - “Invest in coaching and personal development. The ROI is immense when employees can become more self-aware and operate at their best.”
