We hope you all have had a sweet summer and are enjoying the slow transition into a new season. ?? If you been following, selfmade is taking a break from hustle culture and slowing all the way down to rest our nervous systems. We’re calling this period of time?Rest Mode, which is our response to a society that’s constantly telling us to move faster. And just like feeling burnt out isn’t a solo experience, the radical act of resting is also meant to be shared. We're creating a series that features our community’s stories of rest and we’d love to feature yours! There are three questions that we have for you below. Feel free to share as much as you feel comfortable. Reply to the post with your answers and or DM us! As a thank you for sharing your story with us, we'll gift you one selfmade product of your choice + our newly published NeuroBeauty Field Guide! Here are the questions: 1. List 3-5 things that you currently need rest from. This could be people, world events, emotions, projects, work, school, relationships, or anything else that’s weighing you down. If you’d like, you can share a little about how and why they’re making you tired. 2. If you had as much time as you needed to rest, who would you be? How would you feel? 3. What are your go-to rituals that help you tend to yourself?

I'm OOO until ??? selfmade is in Rest Mode. At the start of 2024, my eyeballs decided they couldn’t look at the computer screen anymore. Then, my brain took a vacation from thinking, and words escaped me as I tried to string sentences together. My heart started to shout at me at a terrifying rate of 170 bpm while just resting. My neurologist said if something doesn't change I'll have a heart attack before I'm 40. Ooof. It's funny to build a brand prioritizing mental health and self-care. Turns out it doesn’t mean you’re immune to being negatively impacted ??. Also, studies show that we're more stressed NOW, than we were in 2019 pre-pandemic. But the cool thing is that also through this work I started listening to my body, observing my skin, and giving into what they need: rest. So, commences Rest Mode—where resting is *productive*.?Choosing to slow down is new territory for us as a business and as individuals, especially when the world around us seems to move faster and faster. I haven't even begun to recover from the pandemic and I'm still supposed to be sprinting? So, what happens if we/I don’t take this break? Not only do I worry for my health, I worry for all of our futures including selfmade’s. And our future's so bright. selfmade? has never been about being a just a beauty brand. I've learned that we need to focus on one thing at a time in order to take care and execute in a way worth doing. And we’ve got some very big and incredible things happening behind the scenes. Things that will take us all into a new era of selfmade. But FIRST in order to make them happen, we need to take a break. For the time being, we're OOO and pressing reset on our collective nervous systems. We’re slowing down and partaking in rituals of rest. And we’ll be returning home to our bodies as an act of rebellion, particularly in a capitalistic society that benefits off of using bodies for its own productivity. That's what makes rest a powerful act of resistance. See you later!

We love Taylor deDiego's take on the future of beauty and wellbeing after reading about our sciency approach to neurocosmetics in this PopSugar, Inc. article: "Stephanie Lee hopes neurocosmetics will teach consumers more about their bodies and the direct relationship between skin and their mental state. "The discipline and advancement of psychodermatology posits that emotional and stress intervention is a key piece to dermatological health," she says. As research continues to explore the mind-skin connection, neurocosmetics have the potential to make beauty even more holistic, supporting both your skin and mental health."

I was introduced to neurocosmetics via selfmade? last year when Stephanie Lee, a leader in this space, was raising money. And, wow, I love to see this new and differentiated sector growing rapidly. Here's why I am particularly interested in neurocosmetics as a brand strategist: - It's different. It offers a fresh way of looking at and approaching skincare with a perspective that's far more holistic—and backed by neuropsychology. - It's relevant and topical. Beauty and wellness are undoubtedly merging and neurocosmetics sit right within this meeting point. The conditions are primed for this category to explode. - It's supporting a well-known client base in a new way. We know that common skin conditions like acne, psoriasis, and others affect our perceived self-worth, and the rise of neurocosmetics is helping us all navigate these feelings with a greater sense of compassion, insight, and community. https://lnkd.in/gBC3BEYZ

We were born with it! It = psychodermatology powered by neuroscience. Check us out in The Atlantic as they navigate if Neurocosmetics and psychodermatological products are real or just more mental health washing.

First, I'm a *huge* fan of The Atlantic journalism for many many years. In particular an article that I've carried with me since 2014 was, The Confidence Gap (If you're female, read it: https://lnkd.in/gVvpdgqB). This is also to say they've been FIRE the last 3 years so I have so much respect to their approach to investigation, storytelling and commentary on our society. Which is why it's cool that selfmade? is all up in this Atlantic article that approaches mental health washing and neurocosmetics with healthy skepticism and a discerning eye. It's a necessary exercise to question the validity of marketing and products we bring into our lives with a focus on how it serves us personally - for better or worse. We're built on translating psychodermatology and neuroscience into product experiences that help humans improve their mental wellbeing. All made possible by our growing list of experts: Dr. Robert J. Bianchini, Jeshana Avent-Johnson, Psy.D, Byron Young, MD, Cezary Skobowiat (more stay tuned).
