As a former head of the British Army estate and a former chief executive of the Government Property Agency, he has hands-on experience of asset management and the maintenance of complex and varied portfolios. An engineer by training, he has a long-term commitment to improving efficiency in the built environment, especially through supply chain collaboration and using data to enable better and faster decisions. He now balances his time between non-executive, strategic advisory and consultancy roles. DW145 – Fire Dampers (E/EI) and Leakage Guide to Good Practice for the Installation, Design and Selection, Inspection and Maintenance, and Fire and Smoke Damper Awareness Course Available Now ?? Revisions to DW145 is the latest development in our campaign to improve building safety standards in the wake of the Grenfell Tower disaster. It also follows the warning we issued last year that annual maintenance inspections were uncovering a significant number of incorrectly installed dampers that did not comply with manufacturers’ instructions. DW145 covers statutory requirements for the installation, testing and maintenance of fire dampers and smoke control dampers including clients’ legal obligations to ensure their fire safety systems comply with the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 for England and Wales and the Fire Safety (Scotland) Regulations 2006. It also covers other critical issues including maintenance teams being able to easily find and access dampers for testing and repair, and why designers and installers should seek expert advice from damper manufacturers. Revising this guidance was identified as a priority by the Association in the wake of the Grenfell Tower public inquiry because of the important part dampers play in overall building fire safety strategies. As a result, the revisions to DW145 clarify several critical fire safety issues including the importance of systems being designed to allow easy access so maintenance teams can carry out testing, fault finding investigations and repairs. It also highlights the need for care and consideration throughout the specification and installation works, and that, if in doubt, designers and installers should seek expert advice from manufacturers. With the release of the DW145, we are also releasing the Fire and Smoke Damper Awareness Course ?? In today’s heightened regulatory landscape, fire safety is paramount. The session sparked a lively and insightful discussion on the Building Safety Act and its impact on the built environment, following a presentation from Rachel Davidson and Richard Harris of Gratte Brothers Group, who shared their valuable experiences with the BSA. A big thank you to Richard Merritt FCIBSE, F.Inst.R, Eng.Tech, for his outstanding leadership and support as Chair over the past three and a half years.
