The beverage market is undergoing a once-in-a-lifetime packaging transformation as tethered closures hit the shelves across European Union member states. Starting in July 2024, as part of the EU’s Single-Use Plastics Directive, tethered closures must be designed to remain attached after opening, i.e., tethered, on all single-use plastic beverage containers up to 3 liters in size. This initiative aims to reduce litter and increase recycling rates. With over 80 billion plastic bottles featuring tethered closures in the EU, this is no small feat. Berry has invested in the design, development, and commercialization of innovative tethered closures for our local, national, and global customers. We offer four tethered closure families for various applications. These closures maintain a convenient and comfortable user experience while ensuring best-in-class quality, safety, and functionality. Our unique tamper-evident designs ensure the closure remains attached to the container once broken but is positioned out of the way for comfort while drinking. Two recent news stories highlight these caps: In the Sept. 20 Financial Times, Berry’s Sarah De La Mare says, “The change brought an opportunity to suppliers to optimize their product portfolio.” The Wall Street Journal also reported on page one of the October 5-6 edition that European tourists are starting to get the hang of it.* Berry offers a comprehensive portfolio of flat caps and sports closures, including still and sparkling water solutions, carbonated soft drinks, and dairy and juice applications. On this #InternationalDayofAwarenessofFoodLossandWaste, we’re highlighting how plastic food packaging helps prevent #foodwaste and spoilage – reducing greenhouse gas emissions and allowing people without access to proper food storage to eat safely. Prolonged shelf life and transport protection can help prevent food from spoiling quickly and the correct packaging can limit damage and reduce the amount of food that is thrown away. For example, millions of pounds of meat are wasted every year due to spoilage. The plastic industry continues to innovate to fix meat spoilage through vacuum-sealed plastic packaging that prevents meat oxidation. The correct packaging can double meat's shelf life and reduce spoilage. To improve the #recyclability of plastic food packaging, we recently partnered with Mitsubishi Gas Chemical Company, Inc. to develop MXD6, a high-performance barrier solution for thermoformed articles and plastic tubes, jars, and bottles that is fully recyclable up to 12%. MXD6 is an alternate barrier to Ethylene Vinyl Alcohol (EVOH) that has received Critical Guidance recognition from the Association of Plastics Recyclers, validating its compatibility with the polypropylene recycling stream.
