Bernheim celebrated its 95th anniversary at the State of the Forest on Nov. 21. President and CEO, Dr. Mark K. Wourms and the executive team updated members and supporters on important conservation and research initiatives, Playcosystem updates, education programming, horticulture projects, and the Arts in Nature program, including L+A+N+D. Since 1929, Bernheim has protected the flora and fauna of this critical watershed and has become nationally recognized for conservation and visitor engagement. Exciting news from Bernheim Forest! We’ve expanded our protected lands with the 182-acre Buffalo Creek Tract, an area rich with diverse ecosystems and sweeping Bluegrass views. This acquisition connects critical wildlife corridors and safeguards habitats for endangered species while enhancing clean air, water, and biodiversity for nearby communities. This milestone wouldn’t have been possible without generous funding from the Kentucky Heritage Land Conservation Fund and the Imperiled Bat Conservation Fund—thank you for supporting Bernheim’s efforts to preserve Kentucky’s natural heritage. Volunteers from the James B. Beam Distilling Co. assisted with the Clermont Clean-up on October 24. Lead by Bernheim’s natural areas team, the group cleaned litter and debris from along Long Lick Creek, Happy Hollow Rd., Perkins Lane, and Cave Hollow Rd. Bernheim’s Natural Areas team recently journeyed to Trimble County, Kentucky, to visit the historic Payne Hollow homestead, once home to renowned Kentucky artists Anna and Harlan Hubbard. With the support of Bernheim staff and the dedication of AmeriCorps members, efforts are underway to restore the 60 acres of woodland at Payne Hollow to its native Kentucky habitat. It’s inspiring to see this blend of art, history, and conservation come together!
