I recently had the pleasure to connect with Claudia Bird, who previously completed the Community College Intern (CCI) while attending Berkeley City College, in the Berkeley Lab Engineering Division. ?? Grad School Journey of Claudia Bird Claudia is immersed in a combined Master’s/PhD program at Tufts University. With her first year of coursework complete, she is set to finish another semester and take their PhD qualifying exams in January 2025. Guided by Dr. Luisa Chiesa, their research collaboration includes work with Dr. Makoto Takayasu from MIT’s Plasma Science and Fusion Center and Brookhaven Technology Group, where she is exploring the electrical and mechanical properties of an innovative high-temperature superconducting cable. It’s challenging, but she finds the experience immensely rewarding! ?? Reflections on Berkeley Lab Experience Claudia’s time as an intern and student assistant at Berkeley Lab laid a strong foundation for success, especially learning "how to learn." This skill now allows her to tackle the complexities of research with confidence, drawing on early hands-on experience with engineering concepts. ?? Advice for Aspiring PhD Students For those considering a PhD, Claudia advises keeping your "why" close at heart. Graduate school presents unique challenges, but having a clear reason for pursuing research can be a guiding light. Each journey is unique, but knowing your purpose makes all the difference. We are just thrilled that Hannah Nockideneh was able to join us at Berkeley Lab in the Berkeley Lab ATAP Division for two consecutive summers in the ASU-Berkeley Lab STEM Pathways (ABSP) Program. With funding from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, ABSP supports Native American students from Arizona State University interested in STEM careers through mentoring, research experiences, and opportunities to explore career pathways. Well, well, well ... January 2025 is going to be fun! We will be welcoming back *two* incredible women in #physics, both of whom completed the Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internships (SULI) program at Berkeley Lab. They are coming back to us as incoming assistant professors in the UC Berkeley College of Letters & Science! (Hmm, I wonder if I can still audit classes?) 1) Victoria Xu worked with Maurice Garcia-Sciveres during her internship in 2014. 2) Chiara Salemi worked with Alan Poon during her internship in 2015. What have you been up to this summer? The Berkeley Lab Workforce Development & Education team has been busy! We have about 150 participants in 13 internship programs, and have been hosting even more interns from other programs at Berkeley Lab at our suite of summer events. We are a small but mighty team that relies on the support of our partners, volunteers, mentors, and wonderful program alumni to keep things up and running! Yes, we run programs for students and recent graduates, but we also work with students ourselves! In the first photo you'll see our awesome Student Assistant Lauren Latterell, and in the second photo our fabulous Research Intern Ali Trejo. Fun fact: Pictured in the first photo is Julio Jaramillo Salcido, who *also* started working with WD&E as a Student Assistant. Invest in your people!
