Berkeley Judicial Institute (BJI) University of California, Berkeley - School of Law's Jeremy Fogel is quoted in Bloomberg Law article by Suzanne Monyak and Jacqueline Thomsen, US Judges Make Unusual Hill Push for Bill on Overwhelmed Courts, https://lnkd.in/eHrjxgKQ. From the article: A trio of federal judges visited Capitol Hill to advocate for legislation expanding the judiciary, assuming a somewhat unfamiliar role as lawmakers weigh whether to add federal trial court seats for the first time in decades. ? ….. Jeremy Fogel, executive director of the Berkeley Judicial Institute and a former California federal judge, said judges do sometimes speak directly with lawmakers on issues that affect administration of justice. ? “It’s not common, but in this case, in my opinion, is appropriate,” Fogel said of their advocacy. “And I’m not surprised, because this is the farthest that a judgeship bill has gotten in a very long time.”

Working to establish a bridge between the legal academy and the judiciary
关于我们
The Berkeley Judicial Institute (BJI) will fill a long-standing need to establish an effective bridge between the legal academy and the judiciary for the primary purpose of promoting judicial integrity and judicial independence. Judicial integrity encompasses professional competence, high ethical standards, objectivity, impartiality, respect for due process, and judicial wellness. Judicial independence includes avoidance of political influence, understanding of and respect for the separation of powers, and support for judges facing retribution for their decisions. BJI will also focus on supporting and expanding innovation in education for and about the judiciary and developing best practices for efficient case management and judicial administration.

A technology pioneer in state courts, who “manages what may be one of the most advanced courts in the country for delivering justice online,” according to one leading legal tech journalist. [sch]Legal Tech
A new software just dropped that should make every judge and trial lawyer pause. Think Zoom meetings but instead of showing up on camera yourself, you deploy a digital twin - an AI avatar that looks just like you, dressed professionally, maintaining perfect eye contact. Meanwhile, you're off-camera in your pajamas, checking emails or making coffee. When you speak, your avatar responds naturally with appropriate expressions and gestures. Cool tech? Absolutely. Terrifying for court proceedings? You bet. Imagine a witness testifying remotely through their avatar while secretly shuffling through documents, getting coached via text, or having others in the room feeding them answers. Their digital twin maintains perfect composure the whole time. Even worse - this technology could completely undermine how we assess witness credibility. Those subtle tells that judges, juries and lawyers rely on - the shifting in the chair, the nervous gestures, the hesitation before answering a tough question - all replaced by an AI-generated mask of unwavering confidence. "But we can spot the fake ones," you say? Sure, for now. The technology still has its telltale signs. But remember when cell phones were the size of bricks? Technology evolves fast. Don't believe me? Just a few months ago, a company lost $25M when an employee was fooled by deepfake executives on a video call. No need to panic yet. But it's worth thinking about, isn't it? #legaltech #AI #courts What do you think about this technology? Have you encountered anything similar in your practice?
