In this interview, we discuss Sandy Diao's journey into becoming a Growth executive and how that helps her in her current role as an Investor at IOVC Ventures, a peek into her day-to-day, barriers for women to enter into VC and skills that both VCs and entreprenuers can practice more. Sandy Diao?is a growth executive with a track record of scaling user bases from zero to hundreds of millions.?Diao has led growth teams for over 12 years at industry-leading companies such as Meta (Facebook/Instagram) to build full-funnel growth programs for hundreds of millions of users, Pinterest as the first B2B growth hire to acquire the first million business customers, and Descript (Series C led by OpenAI and a16z) as the first growth hire.?Diao?invests in software companies as a Venture Partner at IOVC and also advises early stage founders on growth marketing.?Diao?is a keynote speaker and lecturer at over thirty conferences on the topics of growth strategy and entrepreneurship. On May 11, the ???????????? ???????????????? ?????? ?????????????? ???? ???????????????? ???????????? was held at University of California, Berkeley, Haas School of Business, drawing over 120 participants. Co-founded by Julia Daviy Berezovska and Shilpa Beesabathuni, PhD, the Female Founders & Funders at Berkeley Club and its offline platform highlighted the challenges and opportunities for women in the startup ecosystem. (The Club is a University of California, Berkeley RSO.) The summit opened with ?????????? ?????????? ???????????????????? emphasizing the critical need for innovative solutions and equitable funding to address the biggest challenges of the 21st century. ???????????? ???????????????????????? elaborated on the club’s mission and vision, which focuses on learning, community engagement, advocacy, and partnerships across the Bay Area. Mariam JantzSell, Esq. shares her empowering insights at the FFFB Summit, inspiring the next generation of female leaders. Highlights included a fireside chat moderated by Ashley Keyes with Lalitha Rajagopalan of ORO Labs, who stressed the importance of reciprocal relationships between founders and funders. Lily Yuen Xu from Amazon Web Services (AWS) led a workshop on overcoming biases in VC funding, based on Dr. Laura Huang’s research. Panel discussions featured insights from industry leaders like Dr. Ashley Zehnder, Amelia Lin, and Jacqueline Cheong, discussing how to navigate funding processes and combat biases, moderated by Sharanya Reddy Charabuddi and Lauren Miller. Lauren Miller introduced the FFFB Equity and Engagement Program, aimed at increasing inclusivity for female founders. The "Growth Marketing from a VC Lens" workshop by Sandy Diao of IOVC and the "Empowering Change" panel including Dr. Yvonne Lutsch of Bosch Ventures, Vivian Qu of SOSV, Meera Oak of Alumni Ventures, and Yulia Lalutska, CFA of Adam Street Partners moderated by Pavitraa Parthasarathy provided strategic insights into growth marketing and female leadership in VC, respectively. She is a co-founder of VC Unleashed, a global nonprofit aimed at diversifying venture capital through education, resource sharing, and community building, particularly for Black, Indigenous, and People of Color.
