It's the LARGEST reconstruction and expansion effort in Chinese civil aviation airport construction history. ?? The Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport Phase III Expansion Project, initiated in 2020, is a key component of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Development Plan, to establish a world-class airport cluster. This ambitious project, a #YII2024 Going Digital Awards finalist, includes constructing two new runways, a new terminal, expanding an existing terminal, and a transportation center. Despite this extensive work, the airport's existing infrastructure remained operational, while the project teams adhered to a strict deadline. Guangdong Airport Authority used Bentley software to implement a digital construction methodology, helping them deliver the complex project successfully. The project developers created 3D models to enhance collaboration, which allowed them to detect and resolve 3,200 potential conflicts early in the development process, thereby avoiding rework. Upon completion in 2025, Baiyun Airport is projected to become the largest single airport in the world. ?? The airport will boast five runways and two terminal areas to accommodate 120 million travelers annually and transport 3.8 million metric tons of cargo. The impressive plan also involves integrating six high-speed rail lines, three intercity lines, one metro line, and two highways, reinforcing its stature as a leading global aviation hub. #3Dmodeling #digitaltwin #iTwin #construction #engineering #infrastructure

Fully opened in May 2023, the Elizabeth Line is the largest addition to London’s public transport network since the Victoria Line in 1968. Operating up to 24 trains per hour with a capacity for 1,500 passengers per train, the line has transformed how passengers use public transport within London. With 118 kilometers of track, including 42 kilometers of twin-bore tunnels linking 10 new stations. The rail network connects Heathrow Airport with the commercial heart of London in Oxford Street and the business hubs of the City of London and Canary Wharf. Bringing an extra 1.5 million people within 45 minutes of central London and serving upwards of 200 million passenger trips per year. Transport for London (TfL) operates the line and wanted to understand future demand patterns to ensure that it would run smoothly for years to come. Due to the scale and complexity of the project, they knew that spreadsheet-based models would not be possible. They used Bentley software to assist with viewing station designs and route selection, ensure optimal station design, adhere to passenger safety standards, and sufficiently plan for capacity until 2076. This approach enabled TfL to forecast 10 million fewer car journeys per year, a net reduction of 24.6 million fewer grams of carbon emissions per day. Congratulations to TfL for driving these impressive results and for being recognized as a 2024 Going Digital Award finalist for this work! Since opening, the Elizabeth Line has become the UK's fastest-growing railway with more than 350 million journeys. #engineering #infrastructure

Lombok, an island in Indonesia, is known for its stunning beaches with clear waters and beautiful reefs. Unfortunately, the region which is home to over 3 million people faces increasing water scarcity during dry seasons, with limited availability of water for drinking and sanitation. To provide balance in water availability between Lombok’s rainy and dry seasons, PT. Hutama Karya (Persero) was tasked to engineer the Meninting Dam project. Work began in 2019 and is expected to be completed this year. Once completed, the dam will irrigate more than 1,500 hectares of agricultural property and ensure the availability of clean water to nearby Lombok residents and tourists. Tricky terrain and an undeveloped site were hazardous for surveyors and construction workers, so the team used Bentley’s 3D reality modeling and real-time visualization software to process drone-captured data to chart maps and monitor ongoing conditions at the site. Digital monitoring revealed that river water around the construction site was becoming contaminated with excavated soil and debris, posing an environmental risk to nearby residents. This information enabled the team to implement measures to reduce pollution and prevent negative impacts on the local population served by this crucial infrastructure project. Additionally, the Meninting Dam will provide clean hydroelectric power to the community. #water #hydroelectric #realitymodeling #watermanagement #engineering #infrastructure

Did you know the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) manages over 80,000 miles of road centerlines? Equaling to about a third of the overall roads in the U.S. state. To do more with less, GDOT asked software and design company, Phocaz Inc. to automate the extraction of road characteristics such as lane widths and counts, shoulder widths and locations, sidewalks, crosswalks, islands, bike lanes, and more. The project required unlocking asset data from legacy files, integrating new multi-sourced data, and creating user-based automated workflows. Phocaz generated synthetic images of road signs which it could upload to the digital twin and created an AI agent capable of virtually driving along the lanes in the twin to detect where lane markings were. Applying Bentley-based solutions simplified the CAD-GIS workflow, minimizing the complexities of creating a machine-learning model. Compared to manual workflows, automating and digitizing the process of finding highway assets and their locations saves significant time and cost while providing more accurate results. This use of AI and machine learning provided additional context to stitch the data together and provide a comprehensive digital representation of Georgia’s road network. #iTwin #digitaltwin #CAD #geospatial #AI #ML #data #roads #engineering

The Kubuqi Desert, located northwest of Ordos City in Inner Mongolia, is China's seventh-largest desert, spanning 18,600 square kilometers. This region was once abundant with grasslands and forests. Throughout the 1900s, the Chinese government began efforts to reverse the effects of desertification and restore the environment. By the late 1980s, the government introduced alternative energy projects in the desert’s more barren areas. Among these initiatives is the Kubuqi Desert Photovoltaic Desertification Control Project. The sprawling project referred to as the "Solar Great Wall" aims to generate sustainable energy for Northern China, with the capacity to supply electricity to over one million households and significantly reduce yearly emissions of various pollutants. The United Nations Environment Programme identified the Kubuqi photovoltaic initiative as one of the most successful large-scale modern ecological restoration efforts. The installation of this solar power station infrastructure will have the double benefit of preparing the landscape for renewed plant growth. Solar panels and brackets can act as barriers against harsh winds, preventing sand drift, while vegetation can thrive in the shaded areas beneath panel rows. For the design and execution of this remarkable endeavor, SIDRI used Bentley software for handling terrain data, creating 3D models, and conducting structural analysis. The designers also had to consider how to manage and accommodate tricky desert terrain on a tight deadline. Once completed, the project will reduce coal usage by 706,600 tons annually, eliminating 1.93 million tons of carbon emission, 371 tons of sulfur dioxide, and 415 tons of nitrogen oxide. #infrastructure #engineering #energy #sustainability #3Dmodeling #photovoltaic
