Created in 2012 with a generous grant from the National Biomedical Research Foundation to Bentley University, the Center for Integration of Science and Industry brings together faculty, students, and visiting scholars in an interdisciplinary effort to improve the efficiency of translating scientific discoveries to create public value. The Center is an environment for thought leadership that brings together interdisciplinary scholarship in fields spanning science, technology, management, finance, and public policy. This scholarship will be informed by expert workshops as well as contributions to the practices of both public and business organizations. We expect that our work will meaningfully inform the practice of translational science and promote public value in the form of enhanced personal well-being, public health, environmental quality, sustainable development, and economic and social growth.

Last week, we hosted a fireside chat on what truly makes innovation work with Dr. Susan Windham-Bannister, the founding CEO of Massachusetts Life Sciences Center. Thank you Dr. Windham-Bannister for sharing such valuable insights on the pieces of an ecosystem and the importance of public-private partnerships in advancing innovation capacity—your expertise and perspective made for an engaging and thought-provoking discussion. Thank you to Payal Arya, PhD for moderating this amazing session. We are also grateful to The Center for Women and Business at Bentley University and Bentley University Center for Health and Business for co-sponsoring this event. Our work (Cleary et al., 2023) was cited by The New York Times this week as evidence of the critical importance of the NIH: "The National Institutes of Health, the world’s leading public funder of biomedical research, has an enviable track record. Research supported by the agency has led to more than 100 Nobel Prizes and has supported?more than 99 percent of the drugs approved?by federal regulators from 2010 to 2019." Interesting representation of how research from the Center for Integration of Science and Industry at Bentley University fit with the work of other scholars describing the role of government funding (specifically, The National Institutes of Health) in the ecosystem for pharmaceutical innovation. The papers by Ekaterina "Kat" Cleary, PhD (2018, 2020, 2023), Zhou (2023), Ledley (2023), Beierlein (2017), and McNamee (2017) are from our research Center. Informative commentary by Meena Seshamani from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services on the process of negotiating drug prices in the first year of the #InflationReductionAct. Price negotiation is central to the concept of free markets and it is good to see this principle applied to #drugprices under #MedicarePartD. Our commentary "How should the government negotiate medicare drug prices; a guide for the perplexed" published by the Institute for New Economic Thinking argues that negotiation should be an effective tool for ensuring that both parties assure value value for their constituents and achieve returns on their investments. https://lnkd.in/e2hbxMQX Bentley University Center for Health and Business, Center for Integration of Science and Industry at Bentley University, Bentley University #affordablemedicine, #pharmaceutical, #innovation, #returnoninvestment, #publicsector, #privatesector
