A little more information on the Portland International Airport expansion. When ZGF Architects was working on the fa?ade design, they wanted to develop a way to reduce direct sun by 20-30% from the exterior and 15-30% from the interior--all the while not obstructing the view from the expansive glass panels. A flowing style and uninterrupted views were achieved with the use of large extruded aluminum fins on the exterior--that also serve as primary structural supports--and an extruded aluminum sunshade on the interior to provide glare protection. The Benson team was installing a few of the fins on the day these photos were shot. When you compare the team members in the picture to the fins you can get a real sense of the sheer size and significance of the fins.
