Summer Camp Spotlight: Hi-Five Sports Chicago Camp for Boys in rising 5th-9th grade ????? Join the Hi-Five team for their inaugural summer at Bennett Day Camp! This high-energy, cutting-edge program gives boys a taste of the Hi-Five experience that kids have enjoyed for over 25 years. The program is designed for all different skill and experience levels to learn and compete in team sports like basketball, soccer, flag football, softball, floor hockey, volleyball and more —all while emphasizing teamwork, sportsmanship, and fun! Hi-Five’s program includes both skill development and gameplay: ? Skill Development – Through age-appropriate, daily-reinforced drills and teaching stations, campers will learn skills of each sport. ? Gameplay – Scrimmages and time-tested games where campers can put their skills into action, learn strategy, and work in teams. For example, Gallup’s research on student engagement indicates a significant need for more active and engaging educational approaches like project-based learning (PBL) – a 2019 poll from the firm found that only about one-third of students reported feeling engaged in school. This is why every high school student participates in at least one internship during their time at Bennett. ? Last night, our 11th and 12th grade students had the opportunity to showcase their learning and celebrate their experience at our third annual Internship Expo. From DePaul University Athletics to Brookfield Zoo Chicago to innovative tech companies and architecture firms, students spent the trimester gaining hands-on experience in fields that align with their interests. The Expo gave attendees the chance to engage with students, ask questions, and witness the impact of experiential learning firsthand. ?? How do we express what we know, feel, and imagine? In the Art Studio at Bennett, our students embody the “100 Languages” — using traditional art mediums, loose parts, and personal storytelling to communicate in new ways. ? Inspired by the work of Judith Scott, our 1st and 2nd graders transformed yarn into deeply personal sculptures, embedding notes of encouragement and hidden messages within their creations. Through this process, they discovered that art isn’t just something we make—it’s a way to find meaning and connect with ourselves and the world around us. ?? On Wednesday night, Bennett Day Upper Schoolers invited the community to Trimester 2 Demo Night to see how #ProjectBasedLearning (PBL) comes to life. ? Over the past 11 weeks, 9th and 10th Grade students explored the intersection of agriculture, technology, and environmental responsibility through their Balcony Farm Project. They studied ancient and modern farming techniques, experimented with hydroponic and soil-based growing methods, and designed a sustainable farm space for our school community. Their work culminated in a showcase of their research, hands-on cultivation, and ideas for expanding urban farming initiatives at Bennett. ?? Should we explore space in the first place? And if so, how can we do it responsibly? This trimester, 11th and 12th Grade students tackled the scientific and ethical questions that guide modern space exploration. From the physics of space travel to the challenges of building livable habitats beyond Earth, they applied critical thinking and engineering principles to real-world challenges. The trimester culminated in the Space Settlement Design Challenge, hosted by Industry Simulation Education, where students formed competing companies to pitch a lunar settlement to a panel of judges. ??
