I'm thrilled to share that my latest article has been published in Frontiers in Toxicology! In our research, we examine the challenges and opportunities associated with the evaluation of immunophenotyping data in safety and risk assessments. We present several case studies that illustrate these points and propose a decision-making process to aid in future assessments of immunophenotyping data. This work reflects a significant effort from all authors - Vic Johnson, Mike Luster, Andrew Maier, Daniel E. Arrieta, and Corey Boles, PhD. Benchmark Risk Group scientists authored a new peer-reviewed publication titled “Evaluation of dermal exposure to phthalates and parabens resulting from the use of hair relaxers”. We applied the American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA) IH SkinPerm? model to estimate dermal absorption of parabens and phthalates associated with hair relaxer use for several commercially available hair relaxer kits. The resulting absorbed doses were well below applicable health-based guidance values, indicating that consumer exposure from use of these products as directed is not expected to pose a health risk. The results of our paper fill an important data gap and will inform risk assessments and risk management of hair relaxer use. This past May, I had the pleasure of attending AIHA Connect 2024 in Columbus, OH. On behalf of Benchmark Risk Group, I presented a poster on a systematic review of the epidemiology of hair relaxer use and hormone-sensitive, reproductive outcomes in adult women. It was great seeing former classmates and professors, as well as connecting with other professionals within the field of exposure science. I look forward to attending AIHA Connect in the future!
