One of those generations is his grandfather, Hersh Smolar, "a passionate Polish communist, who led the resistance in the Minsk ghetto during World War II." 2/7 Ben Yehuda Press published Hersh's own book, *Jews Without Yellow Stars: stories of Jewish partisan fighters in occupied Belarus* last year. It's translated from the Yiddish by Ruth Murphy. https://lnkd.in/g_Dwdgd9 3/7 Hersh Smolar's "short vignettes of partisan life in the Naliboki forest chronicle the quiet, relentless pursuit of the enemy and the ongoing efforts to liberate Jews from the Minsk ghetto." 4/7 Hersh believed that "Com-mu-nism would resolve the Jew-ish ques-tion.” The image here was probably taken when he was arrested in Poland as a Soviet Comintern agent. https://lnkd.in/gjvVaYBn 5/7 Hersh served at least six years in Polish prison; he escaped in 1939 at the beginning of World War II and fled to Bia?ystok in Soviet territory. Maryland Congressman Jamie Raskin was born on this day in 1962.
