From its inception, media has been used to communicate and spread information. It has also served as a key component in many different direct actions calling for change. Whether it be news anchors filming a protest, a social media flyer informing us of the latest Starbucks sit in, or newspapers reporting on a strike, we have seen again and again how important different mediums are to aid in activism and social justice work. As a result, activism and media are deeply intertwined. Given our current climate, analyzing the media we consume is critical. There are a few things to consider when looking for “good media,” including: Are the people doing the reporting within the population that they are reporting on? What does this specific medium commitment to the truth look like? Who is funding this medium? These questions can help us discern whether the information should be shared or forgotten. An example of “good media” that will hopefully never be forgotten is Freedom’s Journal. This newspaper was the first ever Black owned newspaper which aimed to inform and simultaneously help to abolish slavery. The publication was also used to document crimes committed by White people against Black people when no one else was reporting on these issues. The newspaper was circulated in 11 states and a few other countries. The authenticity and integrity of media has been questioned by many lately. Let our history be a reminder that media can be a powerful tool to dismantle the systems that keep certain groups oppressed and purposefully under informed.

Unity in Adversity: How Hospitality Businesses Can Support Each Other in Challenging Times for DEI In a climate where Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) efforts are facing increased scrutiny, hospitality businesses can play a pivotal role in supporting each other and upholding the values that make the industry thrive: respect, service, and belonging. Here’s how we can unite as a community to continue advancing DEI in the face of adversity: ?? Building Collaborative Partnerships In tough times, there’s strength in numbers. Hospitality businesses can form networks to share best practices, strategies, and resources that help reinforce DEI efforts. From inclusive hiring practices to accessible guest services, collaboration ensures that we are all moving in the right direction. ?? Ongoing Education & Training Investing in DEI training and education is crucial. By sharing resources—whether through webinars, workshops, or partnerships with DEI experts—businesses can ensure their teams are equipped to foster an inclusive, welcoming environment for both employees and guests. When one business learns, we all learn. ?? Support Local, Diverse Communities Hospitality thrives on the diversity of its people—both in terms of staff and customers. By working together to support diverse suppliers, local communities, and underrepresented talent pools, businesses not only strengthen their own DEI efforts but contribute to a more inclusive local economy and society. ?? Open Dialogue and Advocacy As hospitality businesses, we have a collective voice that can advocate for policies that promote DEI within the industry. By joining forces and speaking up, we can help influence change and keep inclusivity at the forefront of public and private policy decisions. ?? Celebrating Successes, Big and Small It’s vital to recognize and share the wins along the way. Whether it’s creating a more accessible space for guests, achieving a milestone in employee diversity, or receiving positive feedback from underrepresented groups, celebrating these victories helps inspire others and keeps momentum high. ?? Leading by Example Hospitality businesses set the tone for inclusivity, both internally and externally. From leadership to frontline staff, creating an environment where every person—regardless of their background—feels welcome and valued sends a powerful message to customers and competitors alike. In these challenging times, hospitality businesses have a unique opportunity to come together, strengthen each other, and reinforce the message that diversity and inclusion are not just buzzwords—they are the foundation of a thriving, sustainable industry. Together, we can continue to build spaces where everyone feels at home. #DEI #HospitalityIndustry #InclusiveBusiness #SupportLocal #StrongerTogether #DiversityInHospitality #EquityForAll #CustomerExperience #BusinessLeadership #SustainableGrowth

On September 15, 1970, the still air of New Orleans was shattered by conflict, where the Black Panthers defended their Piety Street stronghold against a relentless police onslaught. This dramatic encounter unfolded just a heartbeat away from the bustling Desire public housing development, a backdrop that evoked a stark juxtaposition between the aspirations of a marginalized community and the harsh realities of authority. For twenty tense minutes, shots rang out like thunderclaps, echoing through the streets, until the Panthers, resolute yet weary, ultimately surrendered to the weight of overwhelming force. Amidst this chaos, tragedy struck an innocent bystander. This chapter of history, steeped in both valor and sorrow, resonates as a testament to the complexities of struggle, justice, and the relentless pursuit of dignity. Building Bridges: How Schools Can Support Each Other in the Current Climate of Anti-DEI Sentiment In the face of increasing challenges to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) efforts, it’s more important than ever for schools to come together, share strategies, and advocate for the values that create inclusive, equitable environments for all students. Here’s how schools can support each other in navigating these turbulent times: ?? Collaboration Over Isolation Instead of facing challenges alone, schools can create networks of support where they share resources, ideas, and success stories. This solidarity helps institutions stay motivated and grounded in their DEI commitments. ?? Resource Sharing & Professional Development By pooling resources, schools can access and share DEI training, workshops, and expert consultations that might otherwise be out of reach. School leaders can partner with organizations that specialize in DEI work, ensuring staff are equipped with tools to handle adversity while continuing to champion inclusive practices. ?? Advocacy Through Collective Voice Collective advocacy strengthens the impact of DEI efforts. When multiple schools unite in advocating for policies that promote inclusion and equity, their collective voice is louder and more powerful. Schools can stand together to make sure DEI policies remain protected and prioritized at the local, state, and national levels. ?? Sharing Success Stories It’s essential to celebrate the successes—no matter how small—in your DEI journey. Schools can share stories of positive impact, demonstrating how inclusivity leads to greater student engagement, achievement, and wellbeing. This can inspire others and shift the narrative back toward the transformative power of diversity. ?? Fostering Open Dialogue Encourage ongoing conversations within and between schools. While DEI conversations can be difficult, maintaining open, respectful dialogue between educators, parents, and students helps build understanding, reduces resistance, and fosters a culture of continuous learning. Now more than ever, schools need to be united in their commitment to creating environments where every student, regardless of background, feels seen, valued, and supported. Let’s stand together to create educational spaces where all voices are heard and where diversity is not only welcomed but celebrated. #DEI #EquityInEducation #InclusiveSchools #CollaborativeLeadership #EducationForAll #DiversityMatters #StrongerTogether
