Congratulations to our colleagues in Atlanta on the successful opening of their exhibit marking the 80th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge. This pivotal moment in Belgian/U.S. shared history offers an important opportunity to honor our fallen heroes, reflect on our joint efforts toward freedom and democracy, and celebrate the longstanding friendship between Belgium and the United States. If your organization is interested in hosting the exhibit, it will be available to travel beginning early next year. Full details below:
We recently had the honor of officially opening the exhibit "The Beginning of the End: The Battle of the Bulge" at Kennesaw State University. This exhibit, curated in collaboration with our partners at KSU’s Department of Museums, Archives and Rare Books and the Bastogne War Museum, highlights a pivotal month-long battle in World War II, from December 1944-January 1945, Germany’s last large-scale surprise offensive in the Western Front fought in bitter cold and horrific conditions in the Belgian Ardennes and Luxemburg. As we mark the 80th anniversary of the Battle, the opening provided us with a moment to reflect on our shared past—the joint fight for freedom and democracy—and to celebrate the enduring Belgium-U.S. friendship and transatlantic bonds that underpins our common prosperity and stability. The exhibit commemorates and honors all those who served during the Battle of the Bulge, with vivid information panels and photographs as well as tangible reminders of its enduring legacy, such as pop culture memorabilia, oral history and declassified war-era documents, and even an original air filter from the Sherman Tank currently on display in the Bastogne town square, nicknamed the Barracuda – a piece of authentic WWII history right here in Georgia! We are also immensely grateful to John Parkerson for displaying his father John Parkerson Sr.’s collection of personal mementos from the battle in which young 1st Lieutenant John Parkerson, commanding a rifle company in the 22nd Infantry Regiment of the 4th Infantry Division was severely wounded, receiving his second Purple Heart and the Bronze Star for bravery under enemy fire. It was a true honor to listen to John’s deeply personal and moving stories of the realities of soldier life and the tenacity of these young men to fight for our freedom and liberation. We will always remember and honor their legacy. The exhibit will be on display at Kennesaw State University Sturgis Library (Atheneum Gallery, 2nd floor, Sturgis Library, 385 Cobb Avenue, Kennesaw) until January 19, 2025 free and open to the public during library opening hours, after which it will start traveling in the Southeast. Chargée d'Affaires Sophie Karlshausen and her team had the honor of briefing a Belgian parliamentary delegation led by Senate President Mrs. Valérie De Bue and House President Mr. Peter De Roover, with 4 other members of the Belgian Parliament in preparation for the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly (OSCE PA) U.S. electoral observation mission. The Belgian delegation attended an OSCE briefing and will be deployed across the U.S. to observe elections on November 5, including in Washington, D.C., Nevada, Virginia and Michigan. Approximately 150 OSCE PA observers, including 130 parliamentarians from 40 countries, are in the U.S. for the 10th election observation mission since 2004. In Washington, DC, they were briefed by experts, stakeholders, party representatives, and election officials, and are now carrying out their mission in various states. The OSCE PA, recognized under the UN Charter, promotes inter-parliamentary dialogue, crucial for advancing democracy and security across North America, Europe, and Asia, with 323 parliamentarians from 57 member states. ?? Last night the Consulates General of Ireland and Belgium jointly presented an advance screening of “Small Things Like These.” This stunning film was a collaboration between so many amazing people and organizations including (but not limited to): Fís éireann/Screen Ireland, Belgian Tax Shelter, Artists Equity, Lionsgate, Belgian director Tim Mielants, and was based off of Irish author, Claire Keegan’s novella.
