Today at the Global Ministerial Conference on Ending Violence Against Children in Colombia, we joined our incredible partners— Early Childhood Development Action Network (ECDAN), United for Global Mental Health, The New School, Being Initiative, and the Trauma Research Foundation—to explore powerful solutions that can address the impact of early adversity on brain development.?Our discussions highlighted the importance of centering children’s and youth’s lived experiences, from community-driven strategies to scaling #mentalhealth solutions through technology, to shape impactful programs and policies. ??Key takeaways included: 1.?Early trauma impacts the brain and has lasting effects on cognitive and social-emotional development into adulthood, especially with prolonged exposure to violence and neglect. Trauma-informed support, such as parent guidance and sport, can help reverse these effects—even in crisis zones. 2. Researchers on the panel shared heartbreaking stories of young children expressing fear and insecurity through self-harm, underscoring the need for more research on early childhood mental health. 3. Interventions should center meaningful child and youth engagement and foster genuine collaboration. 4. Early-stage interventions need support from various stakeholders, including the philanthropic and NGO sectors. 5. Local community involvement is essential; they must have ownership in designing, implementing, and measuring interventions. 6. Youth are leaders who bring community-relevant solutions. 7. Our collective efforts must ensure that every child can access safe, supportive systems. 8. Michelle Cruickshank, Portfolio Lead, Child Development Portfolio at Grand Challenges Canada, introduced the Being Initiative and the Inclusive Learning Portfolios as catalysts for supporting innovative solutions to help children and adolescents facing adversity. ??We'd like to say a big thank you to all the speakers and co-organizers: Daniela Moreno Farfán, Youth Representative, UNESCO; Wendy D'Andrea, Associate Professor, The New School and Chief Science Officer, Trauma Research Foundation; Dr. Alexandra Chen, Trauma Psychologist and Early Childhood Specialist, Healing for Gaza; Maria Adelaida Lopez, Executive Director, aeioTU; Nicole Bruskewitz Director of Education and Programs, Coschool; Camila Andrea Castellanos Roncancio, Program Coordinator, Fundación Saldarriaga Concha; Germán Casas, Child and Adolescents Psychiatrist.
