Is the Freight Market Really Recovering? Here's an analysis of whether we should feel optimistic—or hold off just yet. ? There's reason for cautious optimism about the freight market’s trajectory. Key indicators like a 3% sequential tonnage increase, consecutive year-over-year gains in the ATA Truck Tonnage Index, and the LMI Transportation Prices Index staying in expansion territory (above 50) suggest the sector may be emerging from its two-year recession. ATA Chief Economist Bob Costello reinforces this, noting a “robust gain” in February and a positive start to 2025 despite weather disruptions and pre-tariff shipping surges. But it's not all smooth sailing. The Cass Freight Index’s 5.5% year-over-year drop points to ongoing weakness, while the LMI report highlights risks such as strained supply chains and a dip in transportation capacity in late February, possibly tied to trade war uncertainties. Plus, there are concerns about the reliance on pre-tariff inventory buildups and the sustainability of demand if policy shifts occur. ? So yes, the data suggests recovery—and that’s encouraging.
