Early math and science skills don’t just boost future school success in math and literacy; they also foster a positive STEM identity, an important factor that shapes how children see their potential. It’s well known that family income-based gaps in math already exist at the point of kindergarten entry. Even at a very young age, children can internalize stereotypes about who math is “for” based on gender, race, or socioeconomic biases.
