What about getting your dream project made, having a family, or even just meeting your basic needs? When the wage gaps keep getting wider, and gatekeepers abound, it can feel isolating, and impossible. What if there was a way to subvert the existing system? Where your natural talents and already present resources were able to open up opportunities and help you thrive? Join us for a virtual (Zoom) learning circle to explore and discuss the solidarity economy model and how it can empower, build, and bring balance to the theater community. The time is now to foster economic fortitude and resilience outside the long existing capitalistic and patriarchal structures. When we thrive in community and participate in non monetary economies, we quickly gain power and independence outside of the systems who benefit from keeping us isolated and struggling. Additionally,?we are able to become the creators of our own opportunities and write new narratives for the future! The evening will be 90 minutes and consist of information sharing, open discussion, and culminate in a live needs/offer exchange that will connect participants in real time! Guests will also receive follow up support materials from the event. This event is hosted by Bechdel Project in conjunction with the Solidarity Economy Learning Circles for the Theater Community. Bechdel Project is delighted to name Nikki Brake-Sillá, a disabled Black playwright and filmmaker, the recipient of the prestigious 2024/25 ROO Residency. This powerful evening at Alchemical Studios (50 West 17th Street) on Monday, April 29th at 7 pm explores not only the invention and impact of the rape kit, but also the challenges Martha faced in a system entrenched with sexual politics. As the play delves into her twilight years, you'll discover the resilience and determination of a woman who never gave up on making a difference. "The Kit: Made by Martha" is more than just a play. It's a call to action, shining a light on the ongoing fight for justice in sexual assault cases and the importance of tackling the rape kit backlog crisis. An epicurean extravaganza (wine and cocktail pairings included) designed to take a bite out of the systems of oppression and those that support them. With seven courses designed by Kate Eminger, Stephen Sanders, and Scott Andrews (alums of the kitchen at SPACE on Ryder Farm) for just 25 guests, this exclusive event will be an unforgettable evening to tickle all your senses. All proceeds to go towards funding Bechdel Project's gender equity programming serving over 250 artists annually. Bechdel Project believes that the stories we tell should not just reflect our culture; they should shape it. Our Free Community Space Program serves as a hub for artistic and cultural activities that further work around anti-sexism and equality. This space offers a safe and inclusive environment for rehearsals, film shoots, workshops, performances, exhibitions, screenings, and community gatherings. Fees for space in New York City can account for the majority of an artists’ budget and can often be a barrier to creation. By offering this resource free to the community, we are able to remove this financial barrier and create opportunity for artists and community leaders who align with Bechdel Project’s mission. To date, we have hosted hundreds of community members and donated $20,000 worth of time in our space. Our space includes access to our entire equipment closet and parent inclusive amenities.
