Part of empowering young people (and everyone) involves giving them the knowledge to succeed. That's why we've put together this Sustainability 101 series - breaking down some commonly used terms and giving insight into current events. Sustainability is an important topic for businesses and so having even a basic understanding key to engaging with these topics within your business in a meaningful way. Our first post looks at COP16 - we're currently part way through the climate COP29, but did you know that the end of October saw its biodiversity equivalent? #BECBCSBSustainability101

Today, we come together to remember and honour those who sacrificed for our freedoms. On this Remembrance Sunday, we reflect on the courage and resilience shown by those who served, from the World Wars to present-day missions. At 11am, we will observe a moment of silence to remember the fallen and support those who continue to serve. We wear our poppies with pride and gratitude. Lest we forget.

What have the Shadow Board been up to recently you ask? Well last night we had a brilliant meeting at The Bus Station in Whitehaven, thank you Barclays Eagle Labs for letting us use the space, it was perfect for hosting our hybrid meeting for those who were unable to attend in-person. We discussed some very exciting plans for the future and began getting ready to for 2025... Followed by a lovely team meal so we could all have a proper 'non-work related' catch up ?? It was either John Iceton or Abigail Symons photo bombing in the pictures, so why not let you see both of their cheesy grins ?? Bonus point if you can guess who the glasses belong to ?? Hint: they're behind the camera! ?? World Mental Health Day 2024 ?? Today, the BECBC Shadow Board is highlighting the critical importance of Mental Health in the Workplace. We spend a significant part of our lives at work, making it essential to create environments that promote mental well-being and support for all. A healthy workplace is one where people feel valued, safe, and empowered to speak openly about their mental health. As we recognise World Mental Health Day, let’s remember that fostering well-being in the workplace isn’t just about preventing burnout—it’s about creating a culture of care and understanding. ? What can we do? ? Encourage open conversations about mental health without stigma. ? Provide access to mental health resources and support services. ? Promote work-life balance and flexibility where possible. ? Create a supportive environment where people can thrive both professionally and personally. ?? Prioritizing mental health in the workplace leads to happier, healthier, and more resilient teams. #WorldMentalHealthDay #MentalHealthAtWork #BECBCShadowBoard #WorkplaceWellbeing

This week is National Inclusion Week and here at the BECBC Shadow Board we advocate for young people, but within this we also want to call for work environments that work to include all marginalised groups. This years theme is Impact Matters and so it is important to remember that we all have the potential to make a profound and positive impact. What do you do to foster inclusion within your work place? How can you young people leverage their position to support inclusion in the work place?

Now we are well and truly into September lots of Graduate and Apprenticeship applications are opening up for next year. At the BECBC Shadow Board we want to empower young people to kickstart their careers - so see below some top tips when applying: 1. Research! Look into the company you are applying to - what they do, any key innovation, projects or themes - its important to be able to discuss this if you get an interview and it shows that you are well prepared! 2. Sell yourself! Talking about yourself can feel uncomfortable but make sure to highlight all of your relevant experience and talk confidently about your skill set and any qualifications! 3. Take your time! It can be a daunting experience so make sure you take your time with applications, proof read your answers and remember if you don't get offered every job you apply for - that is part of the process! If you have any other top tips - share them in the comments below!

We came, we took over, we conquered! ???? What a brilliant turnout today at?Britain's Energy Coast Business Cluster's Energy Networx?#ShadowBoardTakeover! Thank you to everyone who attended, and a special shout-out to all of our speakers and egg-timers ?? It's never easy to present to a room full of people, but you all made it look like a piece of cake... or is that The Outward Bound Trust's flapjacks I'm thinking of? ?? It was also great to see so many young people in the room today, as the Shadow Board we really do hope to encourage more young professionals to get involved and be a part of the conversation ?? We hope you all had as much fun, and took away as many insights and connections from today as we have. Thanks again, and we'll see you at the next one!
