Eye Care Recommendations for Observing National Eye Care Month Schedule a Comprehensive Eye Exam Why: Early detection of eye issues like glaucoma, cataracts, or diabetic retinopathy can prevent vision loss. Protect Your Eyes from UV Rays Why: Prolonged exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays can lead to cataracts and macular degeneration. Maintain a Healthy Diet Why: Nutrients like omega-3 fatty acids, lutein, zinc, and vitamins C and E support eye health. Stay Hydrated Why: Proper hydration helps prevent dry eyes, a common issue for many people. Protect Your Eyes During Activities Why: Eye injuries are common during sports, home improvement projects, and other high-risk activities. Manage Screen Time for Children Why: Excessive screen use in children can lead to digital eye strain and may contribute to myopia (nearsightedness). Keep Your Eyes Clean and Hands Off Why: Dirty hands and contact lenses can introduce bacteria to your eyes, leading to infections. Monitor Eye Symptoms Why: Blurry vision, floaters, or persistent discomfort could signal a problem. Wear Blue-Light Blocking Glasses Why: Prolonged exposure to blue light from screens can contribute to eye strain and disrupt sleep patterns. www.beautyofsight.org #eyecaremonth #protectyoureyes #beautyofsight #donatelife #visioncare

Beauty of Sight is honored to join the Eye Bank Association of America (EBAA), healthcare partners, and advocates nationwide to celebrate Eye Donation Month. This month, we recognize the incredible gift of sight and honor the individuals and families whose decision to donate has transformed lives. Every year, eye donations provide the miracle of restoring vision through corneal transplants. Today, thousands await sight-saving surgeries, and eye donation continues to play a critical role in giving the gift of a brighter future. Throughout November, we’ll share stories of hope, highlight the impact of corneal transplants, and spread awareness on how to make a difference. Join us in celebrating the power of eye donation and the legacy it creates. Register as an eye donor and give someone the #GiftOfSight. Together, we can help make vision possible and Create a World Without Blindness. #eyedonationmonth2024 #MiamiEyeBankers #beautyofsight #donatelifeflorida #eyedonationawareness

William Buras, Elizabeth Fout-Caraza, and Katrina Llanes from Beauty of Sight were honored to participate alongside several US eye banks, who are part of the Aleye group, in the Cornea Wetlab at the FacoExtrema congress in Buenos Aires, Argentina, last month. Their expertise was crucial in leading the training sessions on tissue handling for endothelial grafts and preparing DMEK and DSAEK. This event would not have been possible without the tireless support of the team led by Nazarena NASIF and the support from SACRyC and Gerardo Valvecchia. www.beautyofsight.org #EyeCare #CorneaWetlab #BeautyofSight #WetLabs

Corneal Fellows' Wet Lab Training at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute On August 10th, 2024, a significant event took place at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute at the University of Miami. The Corneal Fellows, who had embarked on their fellowship journey in July, participated in their first wet lab training. Under the expert guidance of Dr. Angela Zhu and Dr. Florence Anne Cabot, they honed their skills in advanced corneal procedures, specifically DMEK and DALK. These procedures, being vital advancements in corneal surgery, are set to improve patient outcomes significantly. DMEK (Descemet's Membrane Endothelial Keratoplasty): A corneal transplant technique that replaces only the cornea's innermost layer, offering faster recovery and better visual outcomes. DALK (Deep Anterior Lamellar Keratoplasty): A partial-thickness corneal transplant that replaces the cornea's outer layers while preserving the innermost layer, reducing the risk of rejection. These hands-on experiences, crucial for advancing eye care, are made possible through the selfless generosity of individuals who donate ocular tissue for research. Their contributions are not just donations but the building blocks of new surgical techniques, medications, and technologies and the training of future physicians. Their impact is profound and inspiring. Beauty of Sight proudly facilitates eye donation for research as an end-of-life option. Since 1962, thousands of selfless donors have contributed to advancements in eye care, benefiting countless individuals across generations. We extend our deepest gratitude to these donors and their families. www.beautyofsight.org

Today, on National Minority Donor Awareness Day, we unite to honor the generosity and compassion of organ, eye, and tissue donors within minority communities. This day is a powerful reminder of the lifesaving impact that donation can have and the urgent need for more donors from diverse backgrounds. Minority populations are disproportionately affected by illnesses that can be treated through organ, eye, and tissue transplants. Registering as a donor can help bridge the gap and provide hope to those waiting for a second chance. Together, we can shape a brighter future and ensure that all communities, regardless of background, have access to the lifesaving and life-enhancing transplants they deserve. Your decision to become a donor can make a significant difference. You have the power to donate life. www.beautyofsight.org #donatelife #restoringsight #beautyofsight

Located within the renowned Bascom Palmer Eye Institute (BPEI), Beauty of Sight maintains a strong partnership that ensures all corneas distributed by Beauty of Sight undergo thorough evaluation by BPEI fellows or faculty members.?This rigorous evaluation process utilizes a slit lamp to meticulously check for scars, defects, and signs of infection, guaranteeing that the tissue provided by Beauty of Sight has the highest potential to restore sight effectively. Each July, Beauty of Sight welcomes new cornea fellows. This year, on July 18th, the organization trained the incoming fellows on the critical process of tissue evaluation. This training session was conducted under the guidance of Dr. Rahul Tonk, Cornea Faculty Member and Cornea Fellowship Program Director at BPEI. Dr. Tonk's expertise and leadership are vital in maintaining the high tissue quality and care standards that Beauty of Sight is known for. The ongoing collaboration between Beauty of Sight and Bascom Palmer Eye Institute enhances the quality of corneal tissue and fosters the growth and development of future leaders in ophthalmology, ensuring a bright future for eye care advancements. www.beautyofsight.org
