Some civil engineering firms direct their staff to "over-design" and they do it for a few reasons: - If the design is "fat" now, I can trim it later and look like a hero - If the design is "fat" now, I can be done with this task sooner - If the design is "fat" now, I don't have to try as hard today There is no law in the universe that says a #CivilEngineer has to tell you the detailed truth. Quite simply, "over-design" is a valid truth. It's safer. In fact, it's a good business model. Over-design everything, get more through the door. But you really should care about "over-design." If you don't: - It will cost you time - It will cost you money - It will cost you resource This past year we saved a client millions ($$$) by catching an obvious over-design. The design engineer kept saying a detention pond was required. But it wasn't. It was pretty clear everything had been planned appropriately downstream, so, I got the record drawings and checked. In the mind of the design engineer, providing detention was a "faster" way to approval. Here's what they weren't thinking about: - The land lost to a phony detetion pond - The amount of $$$ lost to a phony detention pond - The amount of time they'd still be spending to do it right, later If you aren't checking for over-design, you're losing millions.
