"The Future of Accountants and the AI-CPA": Over the last few months I've had a lot of people ask me about my thoughts on the future of the Accounting Industry – mostly from people who've spent very little time in it. For those of us who've had the privilege of being trained in Public Accounting, we know, deeply, that this teaches you things you'd never be able to learn anywhere else. Things like: ? How long can someone survive in a room without any windows and without seeing the sun? Or? ? How many times can I do the same thing over and over until I'm tempted to do something risky like change the formatting in an excel workpaper? Jokes aside - my time at Deloitte and EY set the foundation for the way I operate today – for better or worse. It provided the ability to experience the intimate details of the problems that have plagued the Industry for decades. It set a deep understanding of why Accountants, and the firms they work at, find themselves at a critical inflection point today. Until recently, Accountants followed their version of "The golden rule" – "if nothing has changed this year, let's do things the same as last year." With the introduction of AI, this is beginning to change… slowly. There's no denying that AI holds a lot of promise for the Industry… but it has also created a lot of noise. We've seen new "AI for Accounting" companies spring up everywhere, most either repackaging automation as AI, or building to the "simple" thesis that "Accountants are going to be, or must be, replaced." Most of this lacks a fundamental understanding of how nuanced the role of an Accountant is. Accounting is mechanical and will be automated away. Completely. It just will. Accountants, on the other hand, will not. They are the heartbeat of the Industry - some of the brightest financial minds that exist. The role, however, will undoubtedly evolve and Bean exists to accelerate this (long overdue) evolution – to welcome a new kind of financial professional. ?? We do… and at ENGAGE 24, we did. As first time exhibitors, these were our top 3 takeaways from the AICPA’s biggest conference of the year: ?? Most (not all) tech exhibitors had AI included in parts of their product - regardless of how long they’ve been around. Despite the rapid progression of the tech, our Industry is still in the early innings. ??Corporate finance teams, as well as firms providing Client Advisory Services are still stuck doing a lot of manual work and they’re looking for ways to streamline or automate repetitive, routine tasks. That said, most are still unsure about the best approach. ?? Accountants are anything but boring bean counters. Our "We work our assets off" and "Let's get fiscal" T-shirts drew almost everyone we spoke with to our booth, and then they stayed to hear about our product – win! It feels as though there is a ground swell of change getting ready to happen in our profession - most are either anxious, excited… or both.
