According to the Federal Aviation Administration and Air Force Officer of Special Investigations, there were over 9,500 "lazing" incidents nationwide in 2022. This alarming trend, driven by the increasing popularity of laser warfare, poses a significant threat as it is used to temporarily blind troops on the ground and in the air. Recognizing this critical issue, the Air Force has already initiated the deployment of new devices and allocated funding for research into emerging technology initiatives to mitigate this threat. Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University’s (ERAU) annual Launch Your Venture student entrepreneurship competition was held April 5, with three of the six finalists representing ERAU, Rollins College, and Florida Atlantic University receiving awards. Taking home the first-place prize of $10,000 was Tactical Solutions Group, founded by Mario Avila, an ERAU graduate student and recent graduate of the Embry-Riddle RISE program. Tactical Solutions Group will be developing plug-ins for an existing mobile app called TAK (Team Awareness Kit). Taking this year’s second place prize of $5,000 was Rollins College student Marissa Faris, founder and CEO of BeamBloxx, a protective eyewear solution to reduce laser-related injuries that have cost companies up to $300 million annually in the past. The third-place prize of $3,000 went to pet mobility products company Pet HealthCare Innovations?, founded by Florida Atlantic University student, John Thomerson. This competition brought together student-led companies and entrepreneurs, and we are honoured for the recognition we received.
