Our 4th and 5th graders are leveling up their math skills with a focus on multiplication and averages! They have been learning the tricks of multiplying by 11s and 12s, discovering patterns that make mental math faster and more efficient. They are also exploring averages, learning how to find the mean through hands-on activities. Through interactive lessons and fun challenges, our students are gaining confidence in their problem-solving skills. Math isn’t just about numbers—it’s about thinking critically, spotting patterns, and applying what they learn to everyday life! This winter, our 7th and 8th graders are diving into a curriculum focused on math, fine arts, and language arts. They recently started reading Maus by Art Spiegelman, participating in discussions about its themes and narratives. Alongside this, they've kicked off a multi-week painting project, creating their own canvas masterpieces These projects give our middle school students a chance to express themselves and develop their creativity in different ways. Last week’s snow may have put our Beacon Place Moms' Valentine's Celebration on hold, but that didn’t stop us from making up for it in the most delicious way! This week, the group reconvened for a fun-filled cookie decorating party, turning plain heart-shaped cookies into edible works of art. The ladies got incredibly creative with all the Valentine-themed decorations—think heart-shaped cookies, vibrant pink and red frosting, and plenty of sprinkles! ?? Cooking with Ernie is back! ??? We kicked off our first session of the year with a delicious dish - Chicken all’Arrabbiata! Our students learned how to sear chicken and finish cooking it by simmering it in a rich, spicy tomato sauce, then serving it over creamy polenta. The result? A delicious dinner for the whole family! A BIG Beacon Place thank you to Chef Ernie for another amazing class and to all the students who joined in! Beacon Place students had a "hoot" celebrating Valentine's Day! ?? They discovered the fascinating world of owls - learning about the different types, their incredible night vision, and how their unique ears and eyes make them expert hunters. We were super excited to kick off our Winter/Spring session yesterday, welcoming back our amazing K-8th grade students! Our youngest learners continued to build their early math skills through fun addition games, while our 2nd and 3rd graders tackled multiplication. The 4th and 5th graders took it a step further, exploring averages and sharpening their problem-solving abilities! Our 7th and 8th graders tapped into their creative sides with the first sketches for their upcoming painting project and wrapped up class with an initial, thoughtful discussion on their historical book, which is centered around bravery, hope, and the human spirit's endurance. We are excited to continue to celebrate every step our students take as they unlock their full potential this winter and spring! - ?Estábamos muy emocionados de comenzar nuestra sesión de invierno / primavera ayer, dando la bienvenida a nuestros increíbles estudiantes de K-8o grado! Congratulations to Angel, a Beacon Place Launch student, on his full-tuition scholarship from The Posse Foundation! The Posse Foundation Since childhood, Angel has progressed through all of our programs, earning one of only 100 scholarships in Chicago from 10,000 nationwide nominations. This fall, he'll attend Hobart and William Smith Colleges to study Business with a focus on Entrepreneurship and Management. His journey is a reflection of the support and community he’s had at Beacon Place, where his family has been involved from the beginning. His mother was part of the first moms’ group, his sister was our first education intern, and his older brother was a dedicated volunteer. Additionally, his older and younger brothers were also Beacon Place students. Angel is the fourth Beacon Place community member to receive this honor, and we couldn’t be prouder!
