  • Researchers demonstrated that even minor head impacts, if frequent, can lead to lasting neurodegenerative conditions. Despite increased awareness, few linked women's experiences of severe bodily violence to potential traumatic brain injuries. Abusers that abuse physically will often hit their victims on the head to conceal bruises. An estimated 36% of domestic violence survivors have sustained injuries to the head, neck, or face. TBI may also be associated with sexual assault with or without the experience of domestic violence. #BrainInjuryAwarenessMonth #MyBrainInjuryJourney

  • The initial "honeymoon" phase of a relationship can mask the warning signs of domestic violence. Abuse takes various forms—physical, emotional, financial and more. It can affect anyone. The cycle of violence starts with tension building, then moves into a violent acute explosion phase, and then into a honeymoon phase and repeats. The cycle can move slowly or become rapid. When there is an escalation in severity or frequency, it could be a sign of increased lethality risk. If you or someone you know is trapped in a cycle of violence we can help. https://bit.ly/3aEfMN5

  • Isolation is a powerful tool used by abusers to control and manipulate their victims, making it difficult for them to seek help or escape. One way abusers do this is by limiting access to those close to the victim in order to weaken them psychologically. The victim ends up cut off from the relationships that fuel their inner strength, provide validation and support, and could help them to see their situation more clearly. Recognizing the signs of isolation, such as psychological manipulation, cutting off social ties, restricting communication, and financial control, is crucial in identifying abusive behavior. Early intervention to help improve awareness and break the cycle of violence before things escalate is very important. Learn more: https://bit.ly/39KBXPl

  • Intimate partner murder-suicide is happening way too often in Indiana and across the US. On average, more than once per day in the United States, a tragedy occurs where a perpetrator kills an intimate partner, and then dies by suicide themself. Of these incidents, 93 percent involve a gun, and 95 percent involve women killed by their male partners. Too often children are both the victims of, and witnesses to, murder-suicide. If you know someone isolated or in a situation of coercive control let them know safely and discreetly about our advocacy services. Trying to flee is the most unsafe potentially deadly time. You can call our advocates to get helpful advice if you suspect someone is in this situation. We can help them with a safety plan. #LeanOnUs Read this article about a murder-suicide in February that happened in Lake County, Indiana. https://bit.ly/3DLJzUQ
