[PRESS RELEASE]: Connected Senior Program Celebrates Inaugural Graduation in Gold Beach ? GOLD BEACH, OR - The Connected Senior Program marked a significant milestone on Tuesday with a heartwarming graduation ceremony at The Landing North in Gold Beach. The event celebrated the successful completion of the program's first digital literacy course, which brought together seniors and high school students in a unique intergenerational learning experience. The graduation ceremony featured proud seniors receiving recognition for their newfound digital skills, accompanied by their high school student mentors who played an integral role in their learning journey. Among the graduates was 92-year-old Meryl Boice, mother of Oregon State Representative Court Boice, who was in attendance to witness this proud moment. "What we've witnessed here is more than just technical education – it's the strengthening of our community fabric," said Bill Gerski, Vice President of Marketing & Sales at Beacon Broadband. "Seeing our seniors master digital skills with such enthusiasm, supported by our incredible high school volunteers, proves that age is no barrier to learning. This program embodies our commitment to ensuring no one in our community gets left behind in the digital age." Brent Bischoff, CEO of Coos-Curry Electric Cooperative, Inc., provided remarks during the ceremony, highlighting the importance of digital inclusion in rural communities. The program's success in Gold Beach, where 35% of the population is over 65 – the highest percentage in Oregon – demonstrates the critical need for such initiatives. Building on this success, Beacon Broadband announced plans to expand the Connected Senior Program in 2025, with new classes planned along the coast. This expansion aims to reach more seniors in the region, providing them with essential skills for accessing telehealth services, online banking, government services, and staying connected with family. The program's achievement is a testament to strong community collaboration, with continued support from partners including: ·????????Soroptimist Club of Gold Beach ·????????Curry Health Foundation ·????????Coos-Curry Electric Cooperative, Inc. ·????????Calix ·????????Gold Beach High School ·????????CoBank ·????????TNT Electronics The Connected Senior Program represents a significant step forward in bridging the digital divide in Curry County, creating lasting connections between generations while empowering seniors with essential digital skills for modern life.
