The European Commission Health Emergency Preparedness and Response Authority (#HERA) is supporting €24 million, through the #EU4Health programme, in a groundbreaking project. This initiative will develop a point-of-care metagenomic sequencing diagnostic device revolutionizing pathogen detection and enhancing #pandemicpreparedness. ?? Why it matters Metagenomic sequencing analyzes all genetic material in a sample, enabling rapid identification of both known and novel pathogens, addressing the limitations of current diagnostic tools and significantly reducing response times. ?? Overcoming challenges The project is led by Ginkgo Bioworks, Inc., with partners like Jumpcode Genomics, BugSeq Bioinformatics, UZ Leuven and the Karolinska University Hospital, and it is implemented in partnership with the European Health and Digital Executive Agency (HaDEA). I am very pleased to announce that the JRC has released its first Certified Reference Material (CRM) for the surveillance of SARS-CoV-2, the virus responsible for the COVID-19 pandemic. This closes a 5-year journey of groundbreaking milestones that helped curtail the impact of COVID while strategically preparing the EU to face the next disease outbreak. The journey started (in April 2020) with the release of the first control material worldwide which was followed by the development of an Omicron-specific detection method (in December 2021), a “universal” assay able to detect all SARS-CoV-2 variants (2023) and a new assay specifically designed to detect the Ba.2.86 sublineages, also known as Pirola (2024). ? This new CRM, which consists of a tiny piece of synthetically produced viral RNA genome, will allow laboratories ensure that their Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR)-based assays for detecting of SARS-CoV-2 are reliable and accurate and harmonised across different laboratories.? ? ??? Five years ago, on 17 January 2020, the world witnessed a breakthrough in the fight against COVID-19. Just 7 days after the genomic sequence of the SARS-CoV-2 virus was shared, scientists at the Charité - Universit?tsmedizin Berlin supported by EU-funded research networks, developed and validated the first PCR test. ?? This pioneering achievement, enabled by initiatives like Prepare, Compare, and EVD-LabNet through the EU Research Framework Programme and the EU Public Health Programme, was a testament to the power of collaboration and scientific excellence. ?? The World Health Organization (WHO) publicly shared the protocol, providing the global community with the first crucial tool to detect and control the disease - well before COVID-19 was declared a public health emergency of international concern. ?? This anniversary is a moment to reflect on the remarkable impact of science, speed, and international cooperation in protecting lives.
