“Extreme emotions come from extreme circumstances,” Frank Anderson, MD Trauma survivors often endure and survive unimaginable circumstances. But here’s the thing: when you’ve spent so much time holding everything together through extreme situations, even a small, seemingly insignificant event—like losing your favorite pen—can feel like too much to handle. It’s not really about the pen. It’s about the accumulation of everything that’s come before it. Trauma often works like a pressure cooker—over time, stress, pain, and unprocessed emotions build up. The pen is just the release valve, the thing that brings all that pent-up energy to the surface. When you experience an extreme emotional reaction to something small, it doesn’t mean you’re overreacting or weak. It’s your mind and body saying, “I’ve been holding on to too much for too long, and I need a release.” If you find yourself wondering, “Why did this small thing affect me so much when I’ve survived so many big things?”—know that it’s not about the small moment itself. It’s about the extreme circumstances you’ve carried before that moment. Healing happens when we allow ourselves to process those past experiences, giving space for all the emotions we’ve had to suppress to survive. Be kind to yourself in these moments—you’re not broken, you’re human. #TraumaRecovery #PTSDRecovery #TraumaInformedCare #YouAreNotAlone

The most compelling mental health research in 2024 was buried in a cardiology journal. Treating anxiety and depression in people with heart failure and coronary artery disease saved lives. If this doesn't convince you that mental health is key to unlocking value in healthcare, then nothing will.

Shame is often misunderstood to be something that comes from deep within us. In reality, shame is the product of misplaced responsibility and self-blame that results from other people’s hurtful words or actions toward us. When other people don’t acknowledge that they have wronged us, shame is what is formed. However, we shouldn’t need to carry these toxic emotions with us, so release the shame that doesn’t belong to you.
